ROXBURGH.

(From our oxon Correspondent.) I really have very little to say as regards mining. The river rose to an im mense height on Wednesday, arriving at the height of about six feet iv a few hours, therefore it obliged all the miners to abandon their claims on the beaoh. However some- of the men have found work by stripping from the inner side. An accident occured to the dredge John Wesley, it having run foul of its own tender and smashed it. The mishap is attributed chiefly to the compasses not haviug been properly adjusted. A sad case of lunacy occurred last week, the wife of a miner who has a large family being the unfortunate. Tt is believed the woman's reason was overturned through the loss of one of her children, who was buried only a day or two before. There was a subscription made for the U3& of the family, and I must say that .it was liberally responded to . The a,um collected amounted to £50.

The shearers are collecting at Moa Flat in large numbers for the shearing of Messrs Anderson and Kitch ing's flocks. Mr M'Leod and Mr Nicholson are endeavoring to get up a pigeon match there on Friday next, which ought to be largely attended. I believe the races are to be held at Moa Fiat this year, which I certainly think .is' right. That locality possesses the advantage of being uour to Tapanui, and other townships. I might mention that the judgment in the case of Cosgrove a. O'Connor, was not that defendant was to pay £6 for the illegel detention of ♦ horse, but for kindness" shown by plaintiff's wife; and the horse in question was awarded to defendant, aa^ is txmp in. hi*- possession .

• A scratch criefcot ma^ch will be played on Saturday, west. Everybody, is ce< quested to attend.
