TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION WITH ENGLAND.
The intimation of the establishment of through communication between Melbourne and London wsjs known in the former place on the night of Sunday, the 20ih, and the first press message was despatched from Loudon at 4.25 p m tbe following' day, corresponding to Melbourne time of 2. JO a. in on Tuesday, and was received at 11 p.m. on the 22nd, so that it occupied aa nearly as possible 24 hours in transmission. Between London and Melbourne a telegraphic message passes through the h&uds of the operators no less than 36 tunes ; and there are 18 " repeating" stations, at each .of which the message has jbo be received, copied, and retransmitted. Taking the consumption of time in transmitting 3, message of 200. words, the delay on the Indian and connecting lines, London news 24 hours old is not so bad. The only additional items on the Melbourne papers are these :— At the distribution of prices at Salisbury, the Bishop of Manchester said he considered the Oxford local examinations the best movement which had been instituted for the encouragement of education, inasmuch as 3500 candidates had been examined.
Four thousand Liverpool dock laborers have struck.
Five thousand colliers at the Staffordshire works, in order to avert a lock-out, resolved to submit their demands to arbitration.
Great slacking orders have been given in the iron and coal districts,
The ironmasters at Cardiff resolved not to meet the demands of the men, and by a combination close their works within four weeks. The evacuation of the Marne has com-
menced.
Extensive emigration has taken place of the inhabitants of Alsace and Lorraine on the expiration of the option of adopting the Get man nationality. A German squadron is being fitted out for a voyage round th# world, The emoluments of the Bishop of Einerland have been stopped. The Spanish Cortes have rejected tbe Jiepublicans' amendments favoring tbe abolition of sl&very. The Australian Meat Agency, with a capital of Lloo,ooo, has acquired a large business.
