WASTE LAND BOARD.
The usual weekly meeting of the Waste Lands Board was held on the 23rd. There were present — the Chief Commissioner, Mr J. T. Thomson (in the chair), and Messrs Alkn, Reid, and Hughes.
The application of Mr J. I?. M'Culloch, on behalf of Mr Mark Walkem, lessee of the Powder Magazine, for a lease of the Quarry Reserve near the Powder Magazine, Vauxhall, as a site for a dwelling house, was declined.
Mr John Anderson objected to Mr Tweedie having a lease of Rim 446 on the Forest Range, Waikawa, and claimed priority to Mr IVeedie in the discovery of the land. Mr Cutten's remarks upon the matter were read, and it was resolved that tho lease of the run be sold by auction on the usual terms.
The application of Mr J. G-. Gardner, for whom Mr M'Keay appeared, to purchase sections 26 and 39, block IV., Table Hill, was returned by the Government, who would not reconsider the matter. A petition from storekeepers at Manuka Creek, objecting to the sale, was referred to the Warden for his report thereon. The application of Mr John Creighton to purchase part of his residence area adjoining section 2, block 111., Naseby, was referred to the Warden.
The request of Mr C. T. Marie, for permission to increase the maximum price of coal at his pit, near Clyde, from 15s to 20s per ton was agreed to. The application of Mr John Lawson for a sawmill license at Waipori Bush was agreed to on the usual conditions, the terms to commence from Ist June, 1573.
The report of E anger Hughan on a complaint that Mr Chapman, of Hyde Home Station, had closed roads through the run, was read, Ranger Hughan reported that ths roads closed up had had been disused a considerable time, and suggested that a road be opened up from, a point; on the main road leading from Grant's Station, to the Steeple Creek bush. This bush wa3 a distance of 2A miles from the main road. The road suggested was tho best that could be got, as it would be level all the way, and would obviate all further occasiou for complaint. It was resolved that a road as suggested by Mr Hughan be laid off for the public. Messrs G-. G-. Russell and Co., as agents for Messrs Stuart and Kinross, requested that the lease of Run 333 be put up for sale in February, 1873, being twelve months before the expiration of tho present license. It was resolved that tho land be assessed and leased, and that the land be sold on the usual terms twelve months previous to the expiry of the license, agricultural land to be reported on.
Mr Joseph Johnston applied for authority and protection to prospect for coal over an area near Brothers point, Baxter, whose six months' term of the area was unexpired, having been sentenced to two year's imprisonment. The Board resolved it could not interfere.
Messrs Mouat and M'Kcay made application on behalf of a client, for authority to prosecute a person for illegal occupation of Crown lands on a mining reserve at Tuapeka Flat. It waa resolved to request the Warden to report on the case.
