CROMWELL

(F-rom our owtyCorvespoiideiit,)

The rush to th'e.'Barwiu and Char.£ers Towers has not received much ftdditjfln from this distpiet, as scarcely any one has left for those places \ but our.. neighbours in the Wakatip dfs-

trjet cannot say the same, for I see by ' • the local paper that a good number .bave- cleaned out for there, no .doubt attracted by the glowing #3ws. Alining news in this" district may on the. whole be considered favorable. The Star of the East Co. Carrick, are, f>usy crushing a largo paFccl of stone, and intend cleaning^up this week, and anticipate a fair return. The John -Bull ,_Co.," are waiting till the machine now in Goiirse of erection, and expected ' to. be (joropleted next week, is jready, W&en'ihey intend to crush a parcel of ' about 100 tons of yery gopd stone,

The Elizabeth clean up next week, and I hear the stone is looking better than usual The Caledonian Co. finished a crushing at the Standard battery last week, but the result did not transpire, but I understand fair, wages were made, Afßendigo the Colclough Company has changed hands, and the new shareholders are pushing matters along. The Aurora Co. are busy with a trial crushing from, their new leader, which promises well. The Cromwell Co, are going along quietly, but their returns are never made public, so that we have not the 'opportunity of learning what they are doing. The Coal Creek Water Co., tinder the management of Mr James Marshall, are pushing their race along in an energetic way, as though business was meant. This ought to be one of the beat .paying speculations in the district.

We hear that our worthy M. P. C. is cultivating sugar in your district, and a number of us are of opinion that he is now following an occupation more in accordance with his abilities, than that of endeavouring' to' represent Cromwell in the Provincial Council. If- he had any self-respect at all, he would at once place his resignation in the hands of the Superintendent, and thus sever a connection which is doing us a iarge amount of harm.

The member for Wakatip, Mr Hallenstein, passed through here last week, on his way home from the Assembly, where I understand- tie has done good service for his constituents. Our friends at Wanaka had a very pleasant spring meeting, on the 18th and 19th inst., and the affair .was carried out in a very creditable manner.

The Swan brewery, Messrs Jagger and Co., proprietors, httve made a start, and are turning out a very good sample of ale. We have had a visit from a dramatic company, consisting of Mrs Glover, and Messrs O'Brien, Glover and Westropp, and I can safely say it was the most enjoyable entertainment we have had for a long while. All the performers acted in a very spirited manner, before large audiences. We were highly delighted with the company, and should they visit Tuapeka, you can safely recommend them as a desirable treat.

Our municipality is getting along very quietly, and I do not hear of any complaints against His Worship, or any of the Councillors ; which is something to be gratified with in Cromwell. Tour worthy E. M., V. Pyke Esq., paid us a visit last Wednesday, and I think the Tuapeka air agrees with him, for he- is looking first-rate ;■ perhaps the " cultivation of his cabbages in peace" in your district tends to his general health.
