SWITZERS.
(From our own Correspondent.)
In mining matters there is little now to report. Some of the old faces, which have been abandoned for two or three years, are being taken up; and owing to the difference iv the price of water, and the increase in inches per head, there is little doubt satisfactory results will be obtained.
The Break-em-All claim i» reported to be doing very well. '" Tis not in mortals to command success," but the indomitable perseverance on the part of the proprietors, *in this instance, entitles them to it.
At present there is plenty of growling and dissatisfaction from .almost every quarter. Mr. M Nab has been dragging some unfortunate miners to Tapanui, thence to Switzers, thence j the Lord knows where, for mining on* bis . unpurchased run, the same not being declared a goldfield. . He has succeeded in getting a verdict in hif* favor, and. I believe, like the mail with the white elephant, he d&efl n6t know what to do with it. A report of the case has already appeared in jour paper, I presume there would not
be mucK difficulty in "having to£.fc portion of the run comprised witbin the Waikaka watershed, a- declared goldfield. It might be as well, if the miners took the necessary s*eps to have this done. Mr. Reid will be returning from Wellington directly, and, I suppose, will find the province hard up as usual. It will not do to have- the Clarke-cum-Cargill comedy repeated on every occasion, on which the provincial exchequer stands at zero. . The greater portion of Mr. M'Nab's run being* excellent agricultural land, if declared into a hundred, would be bought up at once (the Tutura hundred being almost ' exhausted.) It would be better to have that portion, which is likely to prove auriferous, declared at once, else the miners may find themselves a day too late.
The Muddy Creek miners, and Mr. Chaoman, have not progressed in the settlement of their differences anent the cutting and carting of timber on his run, the Waste Lands Board having deputed the District Ranger to inspect the timber and the roads, which have been closed lately, preventing access to the bush. Probably nothing further will be dons in the matter, until the ranger reports.
lhat precious question, agricultural leasing, is again coming to tho surface ; one or more applications being before the Warden, and it is reported, about a dozen are to follow. These, and the foregoing, are, I hear, to be handed to the Mining -Association for treatment, so that the new commitAefi!s office is not likely to be a sinecure^ From topics like the above, it 4a pleasant to turn to something tnore^ cheery. A grand ball and supper was given ' at the Crown Hotel, on Monday, the 7th inst., on the occasion of the marriage of the eldest daughter of the landlord, Mr. Williams. The weather was everything that could be desired ; the supper excellent, and the guests, I have been told, never mustered so strong (es-pe'ially the fair sex) in Switzers" before. The room was cleared at teu o'clock, when dancing commenced, and was maintained with unabated vigor till a late, or rather early hour.
A man named • Wilson, in tho employment of Mr. Simson, whilst employed in getting out timber from the bush, had his leg broken. I did not hear how the unfortunate accident occurred.
The adjourned case, O'Conner v. Cosgrove, was heard on - Monday, before J. K. Wood, Esq., R.M. The verdict was for the plaintiff for 405., with £5 costs, leaving both parties equally dissatisfied, considerably out of pocket ; and their only consolation being their perfect liberty to commence afresh.
