DRYBREAD.
(From a Correspondent.) October 16th.
Anything new in mining matters from this quarter is quite the exception. Sluicing — the only style of mining here — appears to be carried on the same as any other business. Scarcity of water or hard frosts are the only drawbacks to steady, continuous work. The supply of water has been plentiful for some time back, but how long it will continue will depend entirely upon the rainfall, as the snow is fast disappearing from the hills. If the dry weather we have had for the last few weeks continues, there will soon be an outcry again. A few good showers would be very beneficial to all parties at the present^ime, more especially to the farmers and gardeners in the district.
A little agitation in this quarter might probably get some of our local grievances rectified. One great source of annoyance to travellers has been the frightful state during the past winter of the road from here to Beck's White Horse Hotel. I believe, about fifty pounds were expended last summer on this piece of road. I don't know who is responsible _ for the expenditure of the money, but I believe an equal amount expended this year as judi eiouly might very reasonably be followed by a grant for surveying a new road, for the present one will by that time be quite impassable. I understand that our annual races are fixed for the 2nd and 2rd January next. Drybread has always Maintained a good reputation for successful race meetings, and I have no reason to think the forthcoming meet will be an. exception to the rule,
The concert and ball ia aid of our district school funds is to take, place to
about three weeks. The committee are using their utmost endeavors to make it both an agreeable and success, ful entertainment, and I have no doubt they will in this, as tßey, always have been in (affairs of this kind, be well patronised by the public generally.
