The new undertaking entitled National Bank of New Zealand, was brought forward under influential auspices. Proposed capital, £2,000,000 in two hundred thousand shares of £10 each, the first issue not to exceed 100,000 shares. One-third to be reserved for New Zealand.
The amount of damages awarded to the United States by the Geneva Board exceed three millions sterling by a few thousand pounds.
Many Jesuits expelled from Germany have gone to Ireland, where they are promised a hearty welcome. Coal has advanced in price. 20,000 midland coal miner* are preparing to strike for higher wages.
Continental news is unimportant. The Emperors of Russia and Austria met at Berlin, and met with a brilliant reception.
Wool steadily advanced towards the end of the sales, and closed at an advance on opening rates of 2d. to 3d. Since the sale the market is firm, and prices well maintained, with fair enquiry.
New Zealand flax sales were dull. The bulk was boughtin. 700 bales were sold at a decline oi 20s. to 255. per ton.
