LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council took place on Monday evening. Present : The Mayor, Crs. Hayee, Hay, Hill, Walker and Coverlid. /

The minutes of the previous meeting were read. It appeared that the Town Clerk had misconceived the intention of the motion that he should furnish the Council with a written explanation of a charge brought against him by some Chinese, and had entered on the minutes merely that he should furnish an explanation. The minutes were amended and confirmed.

The Town Clerk said he was willing to afford every explanation, but he thought he might be able to make his statement fuller and clearer verbally. He had made every endeavor to trace the author of tho letter, with the view to ulterior proceede ings. As to the letter itself, all thallegations were false.

The Mayor said the Town Clerk could not give a verbal explanation.

It was decided that the Town Clerk should bring up a written statement next Council meeting.

The correspondence was read and dealt ■with as follows : — T^etter from J. M. Nicolson. asking if ihe lease oi a Corporation Reserve which he had bought had not been made out, it should be made out in the name of Mr. Coverlid. — Received. Letter from Mr. Bushell, in reference to a complaint made against him of fencing in Pladda-street, stating that there was no impediment to the traffic. — Received, and it was decided to take no further action in the matter. Letter from JL. C. Holmes, giving notice of his intention to fence a section adjoining a reserve, and asking the Council to contribute its share of the .expense,' under the provisions of the Fencing Ordinance . — Received, and referred to the Reserves Committee. Letter from Mr. Abel, applying for lease of a Municipal Reserve. — Referred to Reserves Committee. Letter from Mr. Monaghan, drawing attention to the manner the Chinamen were working on Steep-street. — Referred to Public Works and Reserves Committees. The following accounts were received and referred to the Finance and Public Works Committees : — J. Weston, for illuminated address to Mr. Bastings, £12} L. C. Holmes, £18 55. ; Phoenix Water Co., £26; T. Marshall, £1 lGs. ; S. Leech, £4 ; H. Detert, £4. Finance Report No, 5 was received and adopted. On the motion of Cr. Coverlid, the Town Clerk was directed to furnish the Rates and Reserves Committee with a statement of all unpaid rates. The Committee was also directed to procure the names of absentee owners of land upon which rates were due. The Town Clerk was directed to give notice to lessees of Municipal sections for the term of 21 years, leases for which had been prepared,- that they were ready for execution. The Town Clerk was also directed to get all 21 years leases not yet made o'it prepared by Mr, M'Coy. The Reserves Committee was directed to take the matter of the 99 years le;ises into consideration, with a view to ascertain what could be done. t Cr. Coverlid mentioned in reference to the bond entered into by Robinson and Woqtton that, from enquiries he had made, both considered themselvea bou id by it. It was resolved that Mr. Williams should have'the use of section 9, block 2, at the pleasure of the Council, on condition of his draining it. The Mayor that he had, when in Dunedin, waited on Messrs. Briscoe and Co. to ascertain the price of a weighbridge.' Ho found thac a weighbridge +<> weigh

The Mayor stated that he was informed by Mr. YVeldon that the Council would now have to collect the local taxes, auch as publicans' and auctioneers' licenses, dog tax. &c.

The Town Clerk was instructed to" write to the Government, asking them to take steps to at once make the Beaumont road. Some conversation relative to purifying the water in the dam ensued, after which the Council adjourned.
