CROMWELL,

(From/,' our own Correspoitdent.)

Quite a novelty in the way of amusement was afforded to the Cromwell inhabitants on Tuesday evening by the holding of a gift auction bazzar, in aid of the funds of the Duu.stan District Hospital It took place in the large hall of the Cromwell Hotel, kindly lent, for the occasion by Mr. Kidd, an 4 resulted in a most unqualified success. The hall was crowded with ladies and gentlemen. Mr. Facfte acted as auctioneer, and performed the duty worthily and well. The articles disposed of were of a yery miscellaneous character — from a bottle of Godfrey's Infant Cordial to a quit of black cloth. The very handsome sum of JfilOO was realised for the institution ; and too much praise cannot be accorded to the local committee for the able manner in which they carried out the arrangements.

A new industry in the district will shortly be started by Mr. Jagger,-late of Mount Ida, who is having a stone brewery erected about half a mile from Cromwell, near Hartleys Beach. I believe he expects to commence operations the beginning of October ; and as the Cromwell district is a very large one, he will no doubt meet with the success such an enterprise deserves.

Mining matters are tending towards an improvement as the fine weather begins to set in. A crushing of 212 tons of stone from the Heart of Oak Co., Carrick Ranges, realised 2670z5. of gold ; the time occupied in crushing was a fortnight. The Colleen Bawn Co. had 22 £ tons crushed, which yielded 23|ozs. of gold. The Star of the East Co. are now busy crushing, and expect to clean up thisweek, and a fair result is anticipated. Messrs. Alves and Logan are respectively erecting machines in Pipeclay Gully, Carrick Range ; and, when finished, will enable a number of reefs to be fairly tested, and give, it is to be hoped, a fresh impulse to the quartz mining in this district. At Bendigo, the Cromwell Co. are crushing some very good stone, which will no doubt give a very handsome return. Mr. Hebden, one of the original shareholders has sold out for £3000 to Mr. Thomas Baird, late of Naseby, and intends leaving for the home counti y.

Messrs. M'Cormick and Co. are busy pushing the work ahead in connection with their bridge at Bannockburn, and it will, when finished, be a very handsome structure, Tenders have been let for making the approach on the Cromwell side of the bridge, and the owners expect to be ready for traffic by Christmas, and they deserve every success for their pluck in erecting such a desirable structure.

Municipal matters are progressing fairly, excepting a slight spar now and then between the Mayor and one of the councillors ; but as the business of the Council is not interfered thereby, it does not make much difference. The members of the Corporation seem determined to push matters affecting the welfare of the district as much forward as possible, for which purpose they have brought under the notice of the " powers that be " several things which will have a tendency to advance ' Cromwell interests. The,y have Also initiated a requisition calling upon, 'our, representative (?) in the Provincial Council — Mr. Hickey — to resign.ms he has totally neglected the interests of the' 1 Kawarau district. Everyone seems perfectly willing to sign the requisition, and it is to be hoped it will r h"ave that desired effect, thus enabling the gentleman to follow something more in accordance with his abilities.
