THE DEVILS CREEK MINING CO. (To the Editor.)
Siß,=-With all due respect to the directory of the Devils Creek Mining Company, I think they have started on a wronsr lay. I believe they would get the work done quite as well and much cheaper by contracting for it, than by employing men at weekly wages, as they are now doing. I notice this is the * method which was. adopted in connection with the Tuapeka reefs, and I feel cer-tain it would work well here }f tried. Had tenders beeh called for the erection of the huts which have been put up, they would not have coßt bo much money as they have. My only desire is-io see the^noney. pf the shareholders expended as. econo-" mically^as possible. I haye n° doubt this iB also the wish of the directors, but from what \ see and hear, I think tbey.wpuAd do well to act pn the suggestion I haye thrown out. I would " also suggest that the manager be Jeft untrammelled in working out bis ideas. If- he is to be a mere puppet }n. the hands pf the directors, tbe company would be as well without a manager altogether.— l am, j &c, Shabeeoldeb. Waippri, 16th September, 1872.
The*'- Wairarapa Mercury " has ceased to exist, and in its place appears the M Wairarapa Standard," of which Mr. Wftkelin is the sole proprietor. According to the Melbourne " Argus " it .is more than probable that the Victoria GoVernment will deoide to make all railways themselves, in order to have tjie whole of the Victornian l^nes under the Qontrpl of the State. , According to the nineteanth annual re? porVof the British inti-Tqb^cco Socitey, £19,PQ0,000 per annum " is squandered pn, tobacco, that enemy to health, that dißh'qnclr .to the Creator, and the derfir %$Qt from PUTiety a.»d, §obrjety,*
