PORT CHALMERS. Sept. 4.
The coasting schooners Jane Hannah and Mary Van Every arrived last evening, and passed up to Dunedin. The Colonial Government's p.s. Luna direct from Wellington a: rived at 6 p.m. last eveniug. and sailed at 8 o'clock this morning with the San Francisco mails. The s.B. Wellington arrived from northern ports to-day at 8 a.m . and was placed alongside the s s. Phoebe to tranship cargo. The p.s. Dacotah will leave New York in a few days from date, via Cape of Good Hope, for Melbourne, to take her pace in the Webb line. No expense has been spared in the outfit of this ship, with a view to speed and the comfort of her passengers. The arrangement! are very superior to those of her consorts, the Nevada and Nebraska. It is a source of congratulation that the only obstacle to a pleasant voyage between the Colonies and this country — transhipment at Honolulu —is soon to be avoided. We shall give in our next a full description of the L acotah that our Colonial friends may judge of her met its.' We team from good i authority that Mr Webb intends buiidmg ' two additional ships for this line with all liossibie dispatch ; this he is enabled to do, as Congress has repealed all duties on shipbuilding material entering into the construction or repair of ships. — News of the World, July 17. A private telegram states that the barque Eleanor s tiled from Newcastle for Dunedin on the 21st ult. Sept. 5. The Pretty Jane left Lyttelt-n on Sunday at 1.30 p in ; arrived at Timaru, Mouday, 5. 15 am. ; mailed on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ; arrived at Oaniaru, Wednesday, 3.30 a.m. ; sailed 6 a.m., and arrived at Port Chalmers, 12.45 p.m. The s.b. Albion arrived this morniug from Melbourne via the > luff, and was placed alongside the hulk Henbury to coal. Her passengers were, shortly after arrival, conveyed to Dunediu by the Harbor steamers. ihe s.s. Wellington tailed last eveuing for the Bluff. The topsail schooner Oriti, 68 tons, Capt. Bartlett, arrived at noon to-day with a cargo of coal from Newcastle for Messrs J, and D. Findlay ; and in the afternoon proceeded to Dunedin to disehargc cargo. Sept. 6. Per Wellington, from the North : — Miss Colville, Mrs' South Miss Langford, Mrs Falconer and child ; Messrs South, Hoskins, Henderson, Walkden, Johnston, Armstrong, Carruthers, Murtay, Eva, Sutton, Mothersill, Inglis, McKellar, Moncrieff, btoJie, Flew, Wrench, Mercer, Keely, Masters Henderson (2), and eight in the steerage. Per Storm Bird, from Invercargill. — Messrs J. A. Ross, Sharp, De Beer, Wilkinson, Davis, Sergeant Paxton, Mrs Paxton and family (6). Per Wellington, for Bluff.— Miss Langford, Mr Henderson, Masters Henderson (2), Walkden, and M'Kellar. Per Pretty Jane, from Timaru : — Mrs Hill and child, Messrs Cowan and Eaton, and six in the steerage. Per Phoebe, for North : — Messrs Andrew , and Lyons, and six in the steerage. Per Rangitoto, for Bluff : — Miss Mander, Mr and Mrs Instone, aud Mr Hayman. For Melbourne — Miss Carr, Mias Charle3, Mr, Mrs, and Miss Lewis, Rev. George Sutherland, Mrs Sutherland, and five children, Mrs Jas. Webb, Mr M'Dougall, an& twenty in the steerage. "' Sept 7. A ketch, supposed to be the Eliza M'Phee, for Catlin's River, passed out this morning. Two whales are said to have been captured by the boats at Waikouaiti on Thursday last. The p.s. Geelong arrived from Oamaru last night, at eleven o'clock, with sheep, and a cargo of produce. The cutter Jane sailed for Havelock this forenoon. The brigantine Emulous arrived this morning from the Bluff, aud anchored off Deborah Bay. The ketch Huon Belle, from the Coast, was beating up to the Port at two o'clock tbis afternoon.
