THE NEW GOLD MINING BILL.

(To the Editor.)

Sib, — As I understand jour journal has some little circulation on the Otago goldfields, I forward you. for the information of the miners, a copy of the supplementary clauses to the Goldfields Act, 1872. which I have drafted out with the intention of getting them adopted by the Legislature as a necessary addenda to the new Act. Clause 219 deals with the vexed question of Mining Boards in a manner that I may venture to state, without egotism, offers a satisfactory solution . of the question. I feel compelled to remark that I consider the general tone of your leading articles highly reprehensible, and possessing a tendency to subvert that respect and subserviency to the constituted authorities so necessary in all well regulated commuuitios. Trusting you will see the imperative necessity for an immediate alteration in this respect, I have the honor, &c, Mortimer P. Smythe. Board of Rent and Taxes, ' August 21st, 1872.
