Wellington, September 4th.
In the House of Representatives yesterday, T. I*. Shepherd made a lengthy speech in support of the Ministry. Webster and Calder opposed the Government. Pearce, Wellington, supported the Ministry, Jackson, Waikato, moved as an amendment — * l That in the present prosperous state of the country a change of Ministry is not desirable.'' Kelly, Hast Coast, seconded the amendment. Hallenatein, ip a temperate speech, opposed the Government on the ground of abuse pf patronage ; and said Bathgate's figures respecting large deposits in the banks only proved want of confidence on the part of capitalists, Harrison supported and O'Conor opposed the Government. O'Neill moved a,n adjournment. (From a Correspondent.) 4.45. The debate on {Stafford's resolution will end this evening, Probable a majority of three against Government. Fifty members have already spoken, | Dunedin, September 4th. Many members wish a reconstruction of the Ministry to include Yogel and M'Lean, hence the Government defeat will be on this point, and not on Stafford's resolution alone. The doubtful are now declaring this their card. Should Stafford's Ministry be composed of those indicated, some members now voting against the Government have declared they will vote to turn them out at once. The Opposition will have a small majority. Barbor, late postmaster at Hokitika, has been found guilty of embezzlement, with a recommendation to mercy.
