THE SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE.
At last the Government have found it necessary to speak their mind to Messrs Webb and Hollulay about the unsatisfactory manner in wnich they are carryiug out their contract. In a letter addressed on July 6, by Mr Vogol to those gentlemen we find the Postmaster-General informing them of the " strong disapproval "of th« ' overnment of the present state of thiugs ; and expressing his opinion that " you have departed from the terms of your cmtraot little by little, until you consider ypurselves at' liberty to pursue, with ; reference to vu« working of the service, jußt that course wn.ch satisfies 'your own own convenieuce. " Mr Yogel proceeds to condemn the use of tbe boars of the *' Mohonga" class; complains"that at Honolulu continue to be made, aud that there is no word when the Oacotah is to take her place on the line. '1 he concessions which the Government made to aid the contractors in overcoming difficulties incidental to the establishment of the service had been steadily goue beyond, without tbe Government beiug informed thereof ; and Mr Webb is informed they muso now cease. The time has now come, says Mr Yogel, for the Governm nt to hold the contractors to the strict pc formauce of the terms of the coltraot; and notification is made of their intention to do sj. The Nevada, through being overworked, absolutely requires repairs ; and Mr Yogel notines that Bhe will not, unless thoroughly repaired, be permitted to carry passengers from New Zealand after the voyage then commenced ; and Mr Webb is informed that the mail agent is authorised "to protest agaiust the Nevada being despatched on another voyage unless thoroughly repaired."
