Henry Cuthbertson, a clerk in the Post Office, charged with embezzlement of a test letter containing ten shillings, has been committed for trial. A large public meeting, at which the Mayor is chairman, is now being held to protest against the attempt to cause the administration of public works to be handed over to Provincial authorities. Nearly all the merchants are present. Captain Daldy moves an adjournment till Friday in order to give the country settlers an opportunity of being present. Over 500 persons are present. HOKITIKA, Aug. 7, At the cattle sales to-day four mobs were sold. Prime quality realised 30s per lOOlbs. ; inferior, 255. Half-bred merino sheep, 14s 9d ; wethers, 12s ; ewes, 7s. Auckland, August 7, The Wonga Wonga has sailed for Sydney. Another sharejobber levanted by her. The Wellington sailed at noon for the South. Nelson, August 9, There is great agitation here in reference to the delay of the Government relative to the Foxhill Railway. On the receipt of a numerously-signed requisition, the DeputySupeiintendcnt called a public meeting for Tuesday next, to strengthen the hauds of our representatives iv Parliament. Bluff, Aug. 9, The schooner Awarua has arrived. She left Bligh's Sound at noon on Wednesday, the 7th, having been on an expedition in search for tin and copper ore. The party was headed by Mr Daniels, M.P.C., on account of Mr Brunton's company. They bring about 8 tons of splendid specimens of both tin and copper ore taken from several leaders leading to a main reef. They experienced very heavy gales both going and coming, having left Riverton on the 26th June for Bligh's. Auckland, August 9. The Alexandra arrived from Sydney, brings 20 passengers from California via Sydney. The Hero will probably be relieved on the Bth. The report that Sir G. Bowen succeeds the Governor of Victoria, is contradicted. The Melbourne Age says the Hon. A. Gordon, Governor of the Mauritius will be his successor. Melbourne. A private letter from Mr Childers to Mr Duffy has announced that the Imperial Government will subsidize the American Mail contract by paying the American postages, and giving Victoria and New Zealand, LIO.OOO each. 100 to 5 is offered on Little Dick for the Melbourne Cup. A fire occurred on she 2nd at Glassock's horse bazaar. The damages are estimated at L2OO. Flour is a shade firmer. Adelaide wheat, 7s Bd. H.M. steamer Dido sailed from Sydney to Wellington on the 2nd to relieve the Rosario. No signs of telegrams via Port Darwin. Auckland, August 9, At the police court yesterday, before Mr Beckham, Captain Harding, of the Nebraska, was charged with making false statements to the Health and Harbor authorities. Captain Burgess, the pilot, and several otherg, were examined. For the defence the doctor of the ship positively asserted that there was no small-pox on board. His Worship said after the evidence of the slrp's surgeou that there was no infectious disease, he did not think the Court justified in committing Captain Harding for trial. The case was therefore dismissed, and the second charge withdrawn. Wellington, August 10, The Dunedin and Clutha Railway is to be immediately commenced. Mr Alexander Jerusalem Smyth has been appointed Mr Btpgden's agent in Dunedin, and leaves by the Wellington to-morrow. The Invercargill and Mataura line is also to be immediately commenced. Mr O. Henderson, Mr Brogden's engineer, proceeds per Vhcebe to Auckland to day, to commence the Mercer and Auckland Rai'way. The first sod of the Hutt Railway will be turned with great ceremony on Monday week. _ Christchurch, Aug. 10. The Acclimatisation Society meets to-day to consider the amendment's in the Protection to Animals' Act. A Minute Dividend. — In a recent bankruptcy case at Christchurch, the liabilities are stated at L 309, and the assets at 6d. The bankrupt's name is Compton, with the aristocratic prefix of De Blaqxiiere. The Superintendents' Combination.—An Auckland telegram in the Lyttelton Times of the 22nd says :— " Rely on it, public opinion here is strongly opposed to the prosecution of public works by tbe Provincial authorities. The Herald [Opposition paper] to-day denounces the possible refusal of tbe Governor to grant a dissolution, and believes that if Buch refusal is determined on, Sir George Bowen will become highly unpopular."
