The Chief Postmaster having afforded the facilities required, the " Tnapeka Times " will be forwarded through the post as formerly. The Wetherstones Headings take place, as usual, this evening. THE attendance at the Athenaeum readings was not so good last Friday evening as previously. The various readings, recitations, and songs were well rendered, and seemed to give satisfaction to those present. We draw attention to Messrs. Keith and Wilkie's grand art union of oil paintings, oleographs, and other works of art. Tickets and particulars can be obtained from Mr. J. Hairop, Lawrence. A LhCTUKE will be delivered in the Wesleyan church, Roxburgh, by the Bey, H. Bull, at 7 o'clock, on Monday night next, The proceeds will be devoted to the building fund. Mdbkay's circus troupe performed at Lawrence on Thursday and Saturday evenings, and j on Fi iday evening at Waitahuna. The equestrian and acrobatic feats were exceedingly good, and created great applause. The circus has gone up-country, and will appear at Roxburgh, Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Queenstown, and Arrowtown. A court for the revisioa of the citizen's roll was held by the Lawrence Town Council, on Saturday, the 13th inst. There were no objections to any names > on the roll. The names of the ladies and gentlemen who have kindly given their services for the occasion, is sufficient guarantee that a first-class evening's ■ amusement will be afforded to those attending. The object for which the entertainment is given, will, we are sure, attract a large audience. . Captvin Baldwin notifies through our advertisiug columns that the lecture he intended to deliver at Waipori, on Friday night, has been unavoidably postponed to a future date, due notice of which will be given. We understand the postponment was caused by the delay in obtaining a suitable room to lecture in at the Blue Spur. Had it been generally known what a treat was to be enjoyed at the Athenseum on Tuesday evening last, at the Lawrence Athenreum , there would have been a far larger assemblage to pass a "Night among Dead Lions." Mr. Pyke's discourse consisted of short vigorous sketches of celebrated men of bygone times, which he rendered with his accustomed ability. The "Dead Lions" introduced were Macaulay, Scott, Byron, Sydney Smith, Thomas Hood, Douglas Jerrold, Sir Robert Peel, Gecrge Stephenson, George IV., and Leigh Hunt, and in their company a very pleasant hour was spent. The interest of the audience did not * for one moment flag, and their appreciation of the entertainment was shown by the frequent and hearty applause. At the conclusion of the lecture, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Pyke, who briefly responded. Mr. Mears said that he was sure if Mr. Pyke would give r series of lectures for charitable objects there would be large audiences, and the public would be entertained and instructed. The Chairman said ha was sure that Mr. Pyke would always Ye glad to give his services for the benefit of any worthy object. A vote of thanks J was given to the chair, aud the audience dispersed.
