ELECTION OF MAYOR

(To the Editor.)

Sik, — Having been out of town on the day of nomination of candidates for the honorable position of Mayor, 1 regret having missed the opportunity of hearing their addresses, with the pauses of their coming forward, and the grounds on which they aeek to be elected. With two of the candidates I do not intend to meddle, as I consider as far as past services are concerned, they have some show of right to come before the electors ; but with reference to the qther, I cannot understand that he has any shadow of a claim to fill the office of Mayor. He has been a resident of the Tuapeka district for about ten years, and has never during that time, to my knowledge, tak^n any part in any benevolent or any other public movement, having for its abject the good of the district. He has never been in the Town Council, and as far as my experience goos, we do not know whether he is even fit to fi}l \he chair, at a public meeting. Another matter I would like to draw the attention qf the electors to, }s this . What are his political opinions v\. v h reference to the action of the rj-nvernment in selling large blocks of ]:n\ to squatters, and other questions i{;,.)n which so much qf the public weal depends. I would cail upon the electors to pansidiT well before they vote for a inn u si'nply because he fills a certain ■ poMtiuii on the social ladder, without first making themselves acquainted XrjHi his feelings regarding nintfers. on wiiich the future welfare of the district depends. — I am, &c, Elector.
