Navigation of the Clutha. — A memorial for presentation to the Assembly is being largelyjsigned in the Clutha district ; and among the allegations contained in the document are the following : — "That the river is at present perfectly navigable for about 59 miles, or to a point about nine miles above its confluence with the Tuapeka river; that according to the report of Mr Assistant Engineer Johnston, specially deputed to examine the river, it is capab c of being made navigable to the Beaumont, and that the money cost of a few miles of railway might be economically Spent in improving this noble river; that by gold- washing operations vast quantities of wash-dirt are continually thrown into the river impeding navigation, obstructing and diverting the river's course, and causing, and likely to cause still more, injury to those who have purchased land from the Crown, and also to the Government by necessitating the erection of a second railway bridge should the cutting away of the bank above Balelutha township form an island." Under which circumstances the petitioners ask the Assembly that this natural highway may not be neglected ; and to that end that measures may be at once taken fco givp effect to the Provincial Council's recommendation for the establishment and endownmettt of a Clutha river trust,
