FURTHER REPORTS OF SELECT COMMITTEE ON GOLDFLELDS.

Repoet No. 8.

Re petitions of 41 and 46 miners and others interested in the district of Waikouaiti.

Your Committee, haviug considered the petitions, and taken a large amount of evidence, report as follows : — 1. That the laud applied for by Mr. Gellibrand in the Waikouaiti Hundred ia highly auriferous, and has maintained a considerable number of miners for years -past. 2. That a number of men are now employed on the land so applied for by Mr. Gellibrand and adjacent thereto.

Your Committee, therefore, recommend that the boundary of the existing goldfield be extended in the following manner, namely, by including in it all that area in the province of Otago containing by estimation twelve thousand (12,000) acres, more or less; bounded towards the north by the main tributary of , the south branch of the Waikouaiti river, which intersects blocks VII and Till, Waikouaiti Survey District, and by the Blueskin Commonage Reserve ; towards the east by tho south branch of the Waikouaiti river, by block I, Waikouaiti Survey District, and by Kilinog creek; towards the south by the southern boundary line of Waikouaiti Survey District, and its extension westward to Silver Peak Hills; and towards the west by tho present boundary of the Otago G-oldfield.

Report No. 9. Re Petition of GOl residents of Otago, praying for the erection of a bridge over the Molyneux.

Your Committee have to report that they have carefully considered this petition, and have unanimously adopted the following resolutions :—: —

1. That in the opinion of this Committee the traffic upon this line of road is so large, important, and increasing, that the Committee recommend that the Government take prompt measures for the construction of a bridge across the Molyneux at Beaumont.

2. That if the Government cannot see their way to carry out the work, your Committee are of opinion, from the evidence of Mr. Bastings, that parties may be found who will carry out tire work, upon terms that would be beneficial to the publio interests, the traffic being such as would pay interest upon money expended in the work, and the Committee request the Government to endeavour to make such arrangements as would give effect to these resolutions.

Final Report.

Your Committee have now to report that they have considered and dealt with the various petitions (ten in number) referred to them, and have to state that in our opinion the petitions have received an amount of careful and experienced consideration, in consequence of the local knowledge of the members of the Cpmmittee. Your Committee recommend the appointment of a Gold Fields Committee each session to deal with all matters immediately affecting tho gold fields. T. L. Shepherd, CL airman.
