BALDHILL FLAT. (From a Correspondent.)

A meeting was held on Baldhill Flat on Monday evening for the purpose of considering the most economical way of building a schoolhouse in that locality. The meeting was attended by most of the people in the locality, who went into matters with a good spirit. Mr. J. Sinmionds occupied the chair, and. made several remarks in reference to the building and its whereabouts, and thought it would be most advisable to Lave the opinion of the meetipg on theso points, and likewise to obtain estimates of the cost of a suitable building. Considerable discussion took place on the matter, and finally, on the motion pf Mr. R. Webb, seconded by Mr. Foster, it was decided that a buildings 24ft. x 12ft., 7ft. walls in clear, of stone, should be erected ; as also was a motion by Mr. J. R. Kemp, seconded by Mr. J. Butler, that the roof should be thatched for the warmth and comfort of the children. Mr. D. Parker proposed, and Mr. C. Nieper seconded, that the site for the building should be between Butcher's Crossing and ' the dividing fence. Proposed by Mr. J. R. Xemp, and seconded by Mr. J. Parker, that a form of subscription should be drawn up, and parties wishing to sign could do so. A committee was then appointed to carry out the proposed plans, consisting of Messrs. J. R. Kemp. J. Butler, C. "Nieper, D. Parker, J. Lythgoe, J. Hesson, R. Webb (tre. r surer), ahdj. Snnmonds (secretary.) A subsciiptiou list was handed round the room, when the sum of £33 Is. was collected. A vote of thanks to the chairman brought the proceedings to a plose.

It has been mooted that a local jockey club should be formed at Baldhill Flat to give our half-breels a chance. The present plan of throwing our subscriptions into Canterbury is obviously foolish, and destroys interest in races. "We must try to remedy the evil. Small purses for local horses would induce many to train horses, would cause money to circulate through the locality, and good sport and squarely run races could be relied upon.
