WASTE LAND BOARD.
May 22. The weekly meetiDg of the Waste [and Board was held at noon today. Present —Messrs Reid, Duncan, Bathgate, and Hughes. On the application of Messrs Gillies and Street for part of section .5, block 12, Inch Clutha, 39a. Ir. 16p., at present reserved, it was resolved to withdraw the reserve, and advertise the land for sale as land of special value. Upset price, 25s an acre. The consideration of Driver, Stewart, and Co.'s application for a coal lease of 80 acres, on behalf of Andrew M'Laren, was postponed pending the report of the Ranger as to improvements, if any, erected by the licensee. If the land be leased for coalmining, the applicant to have priority. It was decided that a road line 50 links wide should be retained through section 5, block 2, Waipahee district. The applicant was declared the purchaser. The application of W. Shanks to lease bush reserve, section 48, block 4, Tuturu, was declined. The application of William Archer for a jetty and store site, opposite block 25, Queenstown, was referred to the Corporation. On the application of Mr Reid, for Brown and Turner, for a lease of section 42, block 5, Shotover, it was agreed to grant a license for seven yeara, renewable yearly, on the terms recommended by the Warden and road engineer, at L 5 per annum. The lease of Run 177 was agreed to be offered at auction on the same terms as Run 257, namely : To be advertised for sale by auction, under terms of usual lease, on the 13th June next. The new lease to commence at the expiry of the old one, terminable at twelve months' notice by the Waste Land Board. Upset price, Is 2d per acre. Protection was granted to Mr Blacklock for six months, to enable him to prospect half a mile on each tank of the Poison River for gold and minerals. Connell and Moodie's application for a saw-mill license, Waipori Bush, was referred to the Ranger for report. Connell and Moodie's plans, submitted for Joseph Clarke, were approved, and the latter declared the purchaser. Connell and Moodie's application to have the islands opposite block 33, Clutha district, ■urvej ed for sale, was declined. On Connell and Moodie's application to have remaining parts of sections 5 and 7, block 13, Inch Clutha, put up for sale, it was agreed to offer section 7 at upset price, 25s per acre. Donald M'Kenzie and Junes Leslie's apSlication to purchase agricultural leases at lount Benger and Waitahuna East, were sactioned on the usual terms. R. Robinson's map of la, 815, Maungatua, and W. Miller's map of 6, 812, Hillend, were approved, and the applicants declared he purchasers.
Inquest. — An inquest was held at the Hospital on the 27th inst. by Dr. Hocken, Coroner, and a jury, on the body of Alexander Dillon Harvey, clerk, when after hearing the evidence of Mr Caldwell (Governor of the Gaol), Mr Torrance (Gaol Chaplin), and Dr. Yates (Resident Surgeon), the iury returned a verdict, " Died of consumption." It was stated at the inquest by a juryman that deceased was a few years ago a clerk in the Union Bank, Dunedin. Deceased was due for discharge from Gaol on the 30th inst. Telegraphic— The Gazette contains a list of the reduced rates of commission on telegraph money orders issued and payable iv the Colony, which will come into force on June Ist, in addition to the telegraph fee of Is :-For sums not exceeding Ll, 4d ; L 2 8d; L 3, Is; L 4, Is 4d; L 5, l»8d ; L 6, 2a; L7,2f14d;L8,2i8d;L9, 3*;L10,354d.
