DUNEDIN TRADESMEN'S RACES.

May 24, The attendance on the course at the time appointed for starting was only thin ; which is perhaps attributable to the lowering clouds which, during the morning threatened rain. As the day wore on the number of persons on the ground rapidly increased, and by the time the first race took place there was a promise of a large afternoon gathering. Although the time appointed for the first race was 11.30, it was considerably after 12 before the horses took their places at the starting point. The ground, though rather soft, was not in bad condition, It was, however, slightly heavy, which was in favor of horses gifted with strength rather than speed.
