THE "BRUCE HERALD" AND LAND FOR THE PEOPLE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — In an article remarkable for fulsome self-laudation and vainglorious triumph over its fallen foes, the " Bruce Herald " celebrates its ninth anniversary. The " Bruce Herald " says it has been successful. With its chs r icteristic brazen audacity it attributes that success to tbe " consistent advocacy of the true principles of bonajide settlement — land for the people, and people for the land." Let me take an instance —the most glaring instance ever yet perpetrated — of the alienation of land from " the people " — tbe Moa Flat sale. It cannot be forgotten that the first article in tbe " Herald " upon that sale was one in defence of the action of the G-overnment, humbly apologising for the sacrifice of the interests of tbe people of Mount Benger to the pressing exigencies of the immaculate Reid party, wh \ according to the " Herald," were forced to this course, much against their wish, to save the fair credit of tbe province. " Don't cry over spilt milk," was the Job's consolation supplied by the " Herald " on that occasion. Take tbe latest act in connection with this infamous sale— the little bonus of 12,000 acres added to the 45,000 acres, and then examine the champion " Herald's " pages for its opposition to the transaction. It is absolutely silent — not a word of comment — not even its accustomed sham expostulation graces the pages of the people's paper. Li ke the " O tago Daily Times," the " Herald's " mouth has been stopped — by what means is best known to itself*. Although in its ninth year, the " Bruce Herald " is not yet out of its nonage. It is very much to be doubted if there ever will be a season intervening between that and its dotage, if it pursues its present insincere " facing-both-ways " policy. — I am, &c , Settleb. Roxburgh, April 20tb.
