LOYAL WAJPORI LODGE, M.U.1.0.0.F.
FIFTH ANNIVERSARY. The .fifth anniversary of the Loyal Waipori Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was celebrated by a soiree and and ball, which took place in Cotton and Henry'a hotel, Waipori, on the evening of Wednesday, the 37th inst. The large room of the hotel was decorated for the occasion with evergreens and flowers, which were tastefully arranged, and had a very pleasing effect. The tables were covered with a tempting display of comestibles, which reflected mnch credit on the caterers. About 200 ladies and gentlemen sat down, and gave practical testimony of their appreciation of the excellence of the repast. Bro. Webb, N.G*., presided. After the business of eating and drinking had been got through satisfactorily, the Chairman gave the toast of the •• Manchester Unity," which, it is needless to say, was well received. Bro. Cox then proposed " Sister Lodges, coupled with the Tuapeka, Blue Spur, and Waitahuna Lodges." Mr, Jeffrey responded on behalf of the Tuapeka Lodge. The toast of the " Anniversary Committee and the Ladies " was then given, andreceived with acclamation. The proceedings were considerably enlivened by the excellent singing of Miss Webb and Messrs Lumsden, Stevenson, and Booth, who at intervals favoured the company with songs. The tables were then cleared away, after which dancing commenced. It was kept up spiritedly until a^ery early hour in the morning. Altogether the affair was a thorough success, and the committee deserve great credit for, the way in which the arrangements for th* comfort and enjoyment of those 'preseni were conducted.
BLUE SPUR.
(From our Mining Correspondent.) AH the claims on the Spur are in full work, and apparently making the best of the present water supply. On the Gabriels Reef, the prospectors are preparing for systematic work, and are getting a deal of stone to hand. The contractors in Messrs. Clayton and Co.'s claim have finished their contract without any indications of the reef I beJieve it is the company's intention to trace the reef from where it was first struck, which no doubt will be the Burest method.
In the dearth of mining news, it might be interesting for you to know that since the Oddfellows' ball was such a great success, a dancing mania has seized both old and young of our otherwise quiet and steadygoing population. A quadrille club has been formed, and rushed by double the number required ; and people that a short time ago would have turned up the white of their eyes in horror at the idea, are now to be seen by the privileged hopping about the schoolroom like lamplighters. The common salutation now is, " How are you getting on with your steps ? "
