MEETING AT CLARK'S FLAT.
ROAD BOARDS.
A meeting of the settlers of Clarks Flat, convened by Mr. Brydie, was held in the schoolroom, Waitahuna road, on Friday evening, the Bth inst., to consider the best means of raising funds for the formation of the present surveyed road in Clarks Klat from the main road to the old track above Mr. Gmndy's farm. Before the meeting came off, a rumour was current that Mr. Hardy had visited the place, and that at the instance of Mr. James Smith and others, steps had been taken to make the Clarks Flat road a main road to Mr. Smith's station and to the Tuapeka Mouth saw mills.
Mr. Brydie occupied the chair. Correspondence which had taken place between Mr. Grundy and Mr. Hardy, describing the boundaries of the proposed road board for the Tuapeka District, was read.
Mr. Fraser proposed, "That the Chairman communicate with the Superintendent, protesting against the district being formed into a road board until a public meeting was called and the subject fully discussed ."
There being no seconder to the above resolution, Mr. Blair proposed, "That the settlers in Clarks Flat district assess themselves at the rate of la.' per acre in order to raise funds to make the road and keep it in repair."
The motion was seconded, when Mr. Grundy proposed the following amendment, "That the settlers give a lump sum, instead of assessing themselves; and that the Government be requested to subsidise said sum."
Mr. Fraser drew the attention of the meeting to the fact that they were in reality fully recognising the principle of road^ boards, although they objected to them. He suggested that it would be much more advisable to memorialise the General Assembly to have the district declared into a shire.
The amendment was carried, and a committee appointed to endeavour to raise a sufficient sum of money to carry the resolution into effect.
A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close.
Immediately afterwards another meeting was held to protest against the formation of the district into a road board, until a public meeting was held, and the the matter discussed.
Mr. Grundy was elected chairman, and explained the scheme which had been set on foot for forming the district into a road board. He read a copy of a memorial to the Superintendent which had been drawn up by Mr. Hardy for signature. It was stated that a meeting to discuss the subject of road boards would be held at YVaitahuna on Tuesday evening, and the question arose as to whether it would not be better to appoint a deputation to attend there. It was considered that the best thing the inhabitants of the central districts of Waitahuna and Tuapeka could do, would be to take the matter in hand themselves. The meeting then adjourned till Wednesday (last) evening.
