LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The prospectus of a company to work Lomas and Co.'s quartz claim, Devils Creek, •Lammerlaw Ranges, has been issued. The capital requhed is £6000, in 6000 shares of £1 each— ls. a share to be paid on application, 2s. 6d. on allotment, and the remainder in calls as the money may be> required. The holders of the" claim agree to take 1000 paid-up shares for their interest. All particulars can be obtained from Mr. Wm. Hayes, Lawrence, or Mr. H. M'Cay, ■Waipori, to whom applications for shai-es may be made. The provisional directory comprises several of the leading residents of Waipori.
Diarrhcea is very prevalent in the Tuapeka district at present. The removal of CargUTs monument from the Octagon, Dunedin, is an accomplished fact. It is beiug re-erected opposite the Custom House. .Elba Lodge, Clyde, late the residence of Warden Pyke, has been sold by its new proprietor, Mr. A» Christophers, to the Committee of the Church of England of that place, by whom it will he conveited into a parsonage. The' price accepted by Mr. Christophers was £250— payment to extend over two years. A 'gentleman who recently visited Mount Ida informs us that in consequence of the drought, a large number of miners have been compelled to tak« their departure -from that district. If the ensuing winter should be frosty, it is feared that the district will be irretrievably ruined. Mr. M'Cormick, of the Carrick Ranges, proposes to erect a suspension bridge across the
Kjiwarau River, between Stewart's and Rich-
ard's punts, about three miles from Cromwell, Operations will be commenced in six or seven weeks, an 3 the bridge is expected to be ready for traffic in about six months time, Mr. "William M'Beath has been appointed agent for Lawrence for the Scottish Insurance Company. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal \Vaitahuna Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., on Thursday, the Bth instant, the services of Bro. John Turnbull, as Treasurer of the Lodge since its establishment, were acknowledged by the presentation of a testimonial to him. P.G. Bro. Bayliss made the presentation, and in doing so adverted to the valuable services rendered by Bro. Turnbull, and the high regard in which he was held by the .brethren of the Lodge. Mr, Turnbull gracefully acknowledged the compliment paid him. The testimonial consists of an address elaborately engrossed and illuminated, and neatly framed. It bears the following inscription :—: — "Presented to Mr. John Turnbull by the officers' and bretlnen of the Loyal WaitaKuna Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., Otago District, as' a mark of esteem for the valuable services he has rendered to the Lodge, as Treasurer, since its formation." Messrs. Reynolds and Bathgate addressed their constituents in Dunedin last week. After having explained their conduct during last ses-
sion, and answered some questions, the meeting
thanked them for their address, but declined to * approve of the course adopted by them in the General Assembly. Last week's Provincial Government "Gazette" contains the returns of the revenne and expenditure of the Provincial Treasury during the quarter ended on the 31st December last. The total amount of the revenue is stated at £88,594 16s Id, and of expenditure at £72.183 19s 9d, leaving a balance in favour of revenue of £16,410 16s 4d. Among the items of revenue are the following :— Sale of Crown Lands, £5154 6s 4d ; assessment on stock and license fees on runs on Crown Lands, £53,695 18s lOd ; hundreds assessment, £410 -Is 4d ; gold export duty, £4298 8s ' sd; goldfields revenue, £5394 11s Gd; and licenses, £11,117 7s. Among the expenditure are the following disbursements for public works :— Roads, £6765 0s 3d ; works and buildings, £1445 7s 5d ; bridges, £472 6s fid ; jetties and harbours, £2998 9s 9d ; and railways, £2799 12s 7d. .. A fracas between some European's and' Chinese, occurred at Tinker's Gully, near Blaoks, on Sunday the 11th inst. The casus belli appears to have been an attempt on the part of a Christian butcher €0! defraud the "heathen Chinee." On the day in question, several Chinamen bought some pork from the butcher in question, and on weighing it at their own tent, found it short of the quantity represented. They came back and remonstrated with the vendor of the pork. High words ensued, which gathered a crowd of both races, and a general row ensued. Shovels and other peace generators were froely used by those who wished to terminate the row, and with good effect. When the combatants parted, it wa s found that three Chinamen were severely wounded, and the arm of a European, named Robert Scott was broken. The life of one of the Chinamen, named Ah Lock, was pronounced by Dr. Niven to be in serious jeopardy. An information has been laid against Frederick Morgan.
A statement appeared in the "Wakatip Mail" of last week, to the effect that Mr. Miller had retired .in Mr. Macassey's favour "for a consideration." This statement gave great umbrage to Mr. Macassey, who instituted proceedings against the " Mail," unsucessfully however, as the R. M. decided after bearing evidence, that the question was an election eering one.
Mr. Matthew Hay will sell by auction, at two o'clock to-morrow, under a decree of the Supreme Court, several valuable freehold sections in Lawrence, late the property of W. H. Griffin, deceased.
The i>rograinme of the Beaumont Races appears in our advertising columns. The prizes offered are very creditable for the Beaumont^ and there is no doubt but that they will attract good fields.
The new schoolhouse at Manuka Creek will be opened, for divine worship, by the Rev. J. Chisholm, on Sunday next, 25th inst. Service will commence at 3 p.m.
j Our Waitahuna correspondent says that mining operations at Waitahuna are almost entirely suspended, and no alteration is likely to take place until there is a heavy downpour of rain.
A complimentary farewell dinner will be given to Warden Simpson on the evening of Friday, the Ist pros. Mr. John Cormack will take the chair.
A testimonial, to take the form of a gold watch, is to be presented to Mr. Simpson previous to his departure from Tuapeka.
A MAN was found drowned in the Taieri River on tho morning of the 11th inst. On the body was found a miners' right made out in the name of Frank Manning, and marked 5 | 6 i 71, Tuapeka district?
The celebration of the opening of the Roman Catholic School, now in course of construction in Colonbay-street, Lawrence, promises to be a grand affair. A sketch of what is tp take place will be found in our advertising columns, and the programme will appear in our next issue.
A lecture will be delivered by the Most Rev, Bishop Moran, in the Schoolroom, Roxburgh, on Monday, March 12th.- i^Tlie proceeds are to be devoted towards liquidating the debt on the Roxburgh Catholic Church.
By our advertising columns it will he seen that Mr. W. Pine, late of the Coimnercia Stables, has taken the Shamrock Stables.
Dr. Stewart notifies through our advertising columns that he has commenced private practice, and that he may be consulted either at his residence or at the shop of Mr. Jeffery, druggist, Ross Place, Lawrence.
The sale by auction of the Crown Hotel and other property at Bilclutha, advertised to be held by Mr. R. W. Capstick to-morrow, will not take place, the property having been privately purchased by Messrs. Maitland Bros.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council on Monday night last. Present : The Mayor, and Councillors Mears, Walker and Williams. The minutes of the previous meeting were read andconfirmed. Tenders for the construction of eight chains of the Cemetery road were then opened— that of John Tuckey at 7s 6d per chain, being accepted. The Council then adjourned till
Saturday night.
We understand that anew line of coaches between Tuapeka and Tokoniairho, will shortly be started.
Dr. Moran, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin, is at present taking a tour through his diocese. He arrived in Lawrence on Monday the 12th inst, and stayed till Friday the 16th, when he took his departure for up-country. On Ash-Wednesday, the Bishop conducted the services of his Church and preached an impressive sermon to a large and attentive congregation.
