Seymour has been returned for the Wairau by a majority of 39 over Ward, who worked on the protection ticket. Seymour is a Ministerialist.

A shocking accident occurred in the North East Valley. A spark from a chimney ignited the thatched roof of a house occupied by a family named Mason. The father, aged 72, who slept in the upper story, was burnt to death before his sons' eyes, who were nnable to assist him.
