THE CALIFORNIA N TARIFF.
The following is a list of ff Excerpts " from the United States " Customs. Guide," San Francisco, November 8, 1372 :— Wool. — Unmanufactured, unscoured and unwashed, as follows, to wit — All class 1, or clothing wools, namely, merino, mestizo, metz, metis, or other wools of any merino blood, Down clothing wqols, and wools of likq character with any of the above (including all wools not described or, designated in class 2 and 8), the value of which, at the last port qr placo whence exported to tbe United States, excluding charges in such port, shall be 32c. or less per lb — Duty lQc.per lb, and 11 per cent, ad valorem. The same, of greater value — Duty, 12c, per lb, and '10 per cent, ad yal J orem.
All class 2, or combing wools, viz., Leicester, Cotswold, Lincolnshire, Down combing, Canada long wools, oi; other like combing ; wools of English blood usually known by these terms ; all hair of the alpaca, goat, and othec like animals, the valus of which at tbo last port or place whence exported to the United States, exceeding charges in such port, shall be 32.-. nr less per; lb — Duty, l(k per lb, and 11 per cent ad valorem. The same, of greater value, — Duty, 12c. per lb, and 10 per cent, ad valorem.
All class 3, or carpet and similar; \yo^3, surh as Di>nskd, native South. American, Cordova, Valparaiso, native^ Smyrna, and others of like character, the value of which at the last port or place as have exported to the United States, excluding charges in such port) shall be 12c. or less per lb — 'Duty, 3c.' per lb. The same, of greater value, 6c. per lb. Rates to be doubled on," any of the above wools, or hair, when tho samo are not imported in the ordinary condition, or are charged' to evade the duty, or reduced in value by the admixture of tbat or other foreign substance.
Also on wools of first cla3s, if washed, and to be trebled on wool ofall classes if scoured. Wools on the skin the same rates as on any other wools.
Flax. — Stems, or unretted flax, 5, dol. per ton and 10 per cent, ad valorem ; straw 5 dol. per ton ; tow 06 flax, 10 dol per ton ; hackled, known as " dressed line," 40 dol.; not hackled or dressed, 20 dol.
Hides and Skins. — Dried, salted, or, pickled raw, 10 per ; cent, ad valorem ; wholly or partially tanned and dressed, all not otherwise provided for, basils included in this clause, 25 per cent* ad^. valorem. Ale and Beer, 20c. per gallon. Butter, 4c. per lb.
The notorious Redpath (says a Victorian contemporary), who was connected with the extensive railway frauds in England in 1856, arrived in Adelaide from Freemantle the other day, having received a conditional pardon. His pardon does not allow him to go to England, and our Convict Influx Prevention Act . prevents buncoming here. The " Ballarat Mail " says that 200j residents in the Chinese Camp there, haye heen hired by the farmers to do harvest work, at from 17s. to 255. per; week, with, rations. _ '
