NOKOMAI.

Several of your residents and miners who know and are connected with our district will doubtless be glad to hear that a company has at last been formed, >with every prospect of success, to work' the Nokomai Flat, The capital is to be £1000, in 2000 shares of 10s. each, subdivided into 8000 scrip of 2s. 6d. each, payable 25. -6 d. per- share on application, 2s. 6d,' on allotment, and the remaining two calls at intervals* of one month each. A very large number of shares have been taken up in the district. It is expected that the balance will be disposed of in Queeustown and Jnvercannll, which towns will reap ;tho commercial benefits attaching to the successful bottoming of the company on payable gold. It is also anticipated that miners on other' fields who know the district will take shares in the venture. A special grant has been applied for, and at present all promises well.
Mining is at present -at a complete standstill, no water being obtainable except, from the creek, which is lower than it has even been known before. The Chinese have all the creek claims, and still continue to do well. Alongabandoned shaft has lately been taken up by Shaw and party-, who', assisted by the dry season, have -been able to overcome 1 "the wafcer,*and have obtained a fair prospect. Our gardens are. in a sad condition for the want 01 ram; 'the plants, are .literally dying, and everything is backward^ With fhe exception of one or
two slight showers, wo have lad no rain for some weeks.
The examination of the sch'ol children was very satisfactory to he parents and visitors and the aaster. Mr. Lapham received greatpraise from the examiners, whilst hissystem of teaching'was highly commeried. Mr. Hansen has receivedthe appointment of Postmaster, andhe office is now at his residence ; it is:crtainly better in a private house, an^ho is the most fit person on the cre'lv to hold the office. Tho Upper Nevis and Tome Creek have oacli-a small popu!at>R, '.vno are making fair wages, and Uve water at the present time to wort with, which is an advantage few othe places possess.
