We received the following telegram last.evening :~The Agnes Muir, from Glasgow, and the Warrior Queen, from London, have arrived at Port Chalmers.

By telegram, dated Dunedin. Wednesday, 4.37 p.m., we are informed that Clarke has given notice of appeal to the Supreme Court re Moa Flat sale.

Thk annual statutory meeting, for the election of a committee for the Clarks Flat School, was held on Monday evening last. The annual report was read, in which it was shown that the school was free from debt, and that fifteen of the settlers had made a footpath and bridge across the creek. The following are the names of the new committee : — Messrs. Chalmers, Fraser, "Walker, Rowe, Detert, Brydie, and Kelly. We understand that it is the intention of the new committee to ask the Government for a grant of money for fencing the ground on which the school stands, and other improvements.

ABOUT sixteen miners of Tuapeka Mouth, being compelled to cease work iv their claims there on account of there being no water, left for the Pomahaka River, where they p-re now engaged operating on the terraces and river banks.

The population of Tuapeka Mouth is rapidly increasing, without the assistance of immigration. • Dr. Mailler vaccinated a dozen youngsters there last waelc, and intends to similarly operate on another dozen this weak.

The programme of the races to come off on February Bfch and 9th will be found in our advertising columns. It is w/ll drawn up, and the amount of money offered for prizes ought to bring together large fields of hoises.

Fbesh butter is being vended at Balclutha at Cd. per pound.

Trial crushing? of stone from Lomas's and Ritchie's reefs, Deep Scream, have been made at the O. P. Q. Batteiy, Wstipori. The former yielded at the rate of 2ozs. to the ton, and the latter at the rate of loz. to the ton.

We congratulate the Beaumont and Evans Hat people, on the recognition of their claims for Government aid for their schools. At the last meeting of the Board of Education, it was decided to grant £'~>o per annum, to each of these schools.

As an example of the scarcity of water in the Switzers district, we may mention that fcheie is no water in the Independent race, and that in ■the race of Messrs. Skene and Co., which generally carries a stream of 14 heads, there are only 2 heads at present flowing. The effect of the scarcity of water on the mining community in easily imagined.

The richest ground being worked in Swifzera at the present time is on Muddy Creek.

The new teacher for the Switzers School has arrived at the scene of his labours.

Iff the Provincial Government "Gazette" of the 17th inst., it is notified that tenders will be received for the construction of a foot bridge over the Pomahaka on the Beaumont and Switzeis Koad. Plans and specific itions can be. seen at Tapanui, and at the Office of the Engineer-in-Chief. Dunedin.

It is notified in the Provincial Government "Gazette" of the 17th inst., that the application of Mr. .T. G-. Smith for a goldmining le.ise of ten acres of land in the Table Hill district, in close proximity to the new Ocean View Company's claim, has been refused by the Warden ; ako that Mr. H. L. Sqnires has withdrawn his application for a goldmining lease of 400 yds by 200 yds in .Quartz Gully, Nuggetty Gully, Waitahuna, Table Hill, made on behalf o f the Waitahuna Nuggetty dully Company. These lands are now open for occupation by holders of miner's rights.

A meeting of the residents of Evans Flat, •was held on ilfonday evening, for the purpose of electing a school committee for the year. The following gentlemen were chosen : — Mr. Drapper, Piesident, Messrs. Sanderson, Jas. Hopkins, G. Munro, D. Evans, W. Baillie, G. Brook and B. Fargher. The latter gentleman was appointed secretary. A sub-committee was »ppointed to select a site for the proposed new school, in the event of the Education Board granting the application for it. On Tuesday evening, the sub-committee aftei examination decided upon a location opposite .Mr. Hopkins' Hotel and Store.

The amount deposited in the Savings Bank, Switzers. from January Ist, to J me 31st, 1871, was £1370. The amount withdrawn- between the' same dates was £570. During tlie same 6' months, money orders for -£1670 were .issued, and £159 paid in money orders in Switzers."

The total uuwiber of pupils attending the"- school during 1871, was 40 (as against 45 in 1870. ' ' -

AT the usual- quarterly meeting of the-Court Star of Tuapeka, A.O.F. held in the Court-room, Athenaeum, Lawrence, on the flth inst., the balance sheet was read and adopted- Bro. W. Kay was installed C.K. ; Bro." Bruce. S C. R. ; Bro.- GilmouryS.W. ; Bro. Gillard,J.N. ; Bro. Brosnan, 5.8. ; Bro. D. Murray, J.B. Trustees — Bros. Harrop, Morrison, and Thompson, Bro. Grow was re-elected Treasurer; Bro. Love, Secretaiy ; Dr. Halley, Surgeon ; and Bro. Harrop, Chemist.

A pdblio meetiug will be held at Beighton'sAssembly Room, Roxburgh, on the evening of Saturday, the 27th inst.. for the purpose of electing a committee to look after the interests of the Teviot district.

The Lawrence Grammar School will re-open on Monday next, the 29th inst.

The Presbyterian Synod requested the Rev. Mr. Sutherland to resign his pastorate of the First Chuich. Mr. Sutherland, however, does not "see it," and refuses to comply with the wishes of the Synod.

A meeting of the Tuapeka Railway Committee was held on Thursday last. After discussion it was resolved to send a deputation to wait upon the Hon. Mr. Reeves (Minister of Public Works for the Middle Islaud), to endeavour to induce him to pay a visit to Lawrence.

Wk understand that a requisition, numerously signed by the residents of the Wakaia district, has been presented to Mr. J. B. Bradshaw, calliug upon him to resign the representation of the said district in the House of Representatives and Provincial Council. Those who signed the requisition are anxiously awating a reply.

The usual monthly meeting of the Hospital Committee will take place on Tuesday evening next.

During the absence of Mr. Simpson —who is to be Warden of the Dunstan district on the transference of Mr. Pyke to Tuapeka— Mr. Carew, of Blacks, will take charge of the Dunstan district, Mr. Robinson, of Mount Ida, taking a portion of Blacks district.

Thursday last was a grand field day among the Masonic fraternity of Tuapeka, the occasion being the installation of the W.M. of the Lodge St. George, EC, and the investiture of his' officers for the ensuing twelve months. Masonry has, we understand, been somewhat neglected for the last twelve months in Tuapeka, and Lodge St, George in an almost moiibund state. However, it has been resuscitated, and its members seem determined 'to keep it in existence. Kenewed interest has been taken in Alasonry, and there is every reason to believe that a prosperous future is in store for the local lodge. x\t the installation ceremony there was a large assemblage of members of the craft. The beautiful and impressive ceremony of installation was admirably performed by Bro. Nathan, P.D.G.S.W., of Dunedin. The new officers were— Bros. Bastings, W.M. ; George Clark, 1. P. ; Budge, S. W. ; Meyer, I.W. ; H^rrop, Secretaiy ; Williams, S D. ; 4.1-thui, J.I). ; Hayes, IG. After the Lodge was closed, the brethren sat down to a sumptuous repast, but what took place is only known to the initiated.

Messrs. Holly, O'Brien, and Cowle, late of the American Excelsior Minstrels, announce in our advertising columns their intention of appearing at the Commercial Assembly Room to-night and to-morrow night. The Excelsior troupe, are highly spoken of Uy the press of the places which they have visited. We have no doubt that they will have large audiences, and that the audiences will be delighted.

New mining regulations appear in the Provincial '*' Gazetta " of the 9th inst. A resume" of the alterations will appear in our next issue.

A fire occurred at Tokomairiroon the afternoon of Friday last, which consumed the stables of Langley's White Hoise Hotel. With great exertions all the horses, wish the exception of one wer-'got out. The loss of Messrs. Soutter, Hislop aul Gray, the proprietors of the buildings, is estimated at £250, L2OO of which is covered by insurance. Mr. Langley's loss is L3oo— none of which is covered by insurance.
