GABRIELS QUARTZ REEF.

Oi Monday last, a party commenced prospecting at the" extreme northern boundary of the prospectors' claim, next to Clayton's claim. They put in an open cut on the Wetherstones road, and after carrying it about forty feet across the line of reef, struck the cap about two and a-half feet trom the surface. They have since sunk down two feet on the reef. It is well defined, about a foot wide, with about four inches of casing on each. side. The stone is of the same description as that in the prospectors tunnel. Rough gold is plainly visible in a number of specimens which have been broken indiscriminately off the exposed stone, and the casing yields excellent prospects. In the shaft sunk by the prospectors, several small leaders, runniug in to the reef, have been found. Good prospects have been obtained from them. The sinking is through a bluish slate — a very favourable indication. The bhaft is about 52 feet iown from the surface, about twentyseven feet of which is through the slate referred to. If the reef is not found at at a depth of thirty feet, the prospectors intend putting in a drive. Portions of the prospecting claim have been twice jumped, the result of which will be found in our report of the Warden's Court. Since our last report, several fresh claims have been pegged off. Messrs. Clayton and Co. have applied for and received permission from the Warden to prospect for the reef on Mr. Gilbert Clark's agricultural lease.
