ENGLISH EXTEACTS.
The Principal of the Working- Men's College, the Eev. F. D. Mauricp, in opening, last Monday, the new session, brought before the College a proposal proceeding from the Working- Women's College, in Queen's Square, for such an enlargement of the stronger and older institution as to enable it to include instruction for women as well as men. Mr. Maurice gave no opinion of his own on the proposal as a practical measure, but he made the suggestion the occasion for uttering a strong protest against the modern doctrine that women should be still taught for prudential reasons to believe what men think they are strong enough to recognize as untrue. "It was absurd- to bring up men as worshippers of Mammon, and womqp. as worshippers of God." Certainly, to propose an exoteric creed for women and an esoteric scepticism for men, does seem like the most diabolic of all suggestions for multiplying the insincerities and undermining the intellect of both sexes. To teach what you doubt, and to doubt what you feel it necessaiy in common prudence to teach, involves a doublestranded faithlessness — trust in what is false for women, and distrust of what is true for men. — " Pall Mall Gazette."
An ambitious project has been formed by a small knot of rabbis in Frankfort, viz., no less then to lead the scattered children of Israel back to Palestine, and to establish a Jewish Kingdom there once more. Invitations to join the project have been printed in great numbers, and are by this time circulating among the numerous members of the ancient race throughout Germany ; and, if we may credit the report of newspapers friendly to Judaism, influential moneyed men in the old imperial city — the headquarters of the German Jews — have given it their substantial support. The originators endeavours to prove that the undertaking is by no means as impractiable as it at first sight seems, and remind their fellow-creedsmen that it is what they pray for — if they pray at all — three or four times every day — viz., in the " Sheraonach Esrech." in their noon and evening, and, in fact, in every prayer sanctioned by their law. Moreover, they interpret the Bible passage, " Return to me and I will return to you," meaning literally that on the Jews returning to Jerusalem the Lord, and with Him power and prosperity, will return to them. The lay sons of Israel will, we fear, reject this literal interpretation, and discover some little reluctance to leave their thriving business among the Gentiles in orJer to realize what they may still be very ready to pray for. — Ibid.
We learn that the German and Austrian Cabinets are bound to Oiich other on one point " in writing," — that point being " the defence of society against the anarchist party in Europe," —"in other words, we suppose, "the International," and all other combinations which the two powers like to regard as "anarchist." That looks veiy like a Holy Alliance, the veiy thing to give " the International " new strength and influence after its recent blunders and fiascos. The " anarchist party " in Europe contains — not perhaps the only persons who are likely to read Count Beast's communication with satisfaction, but certainly the only ones who will find in it any rail justification for satisfaction. — " Spectator."
