THE GOLD DUTY. Nn ,,. #»a every mining i<itrict o f'i m . portancc can boast of their JUtniiu/ -a O «o c iations, it would not, ws presume, be out of place to point quk a way in which they cauld confer a lusting benefit on the miners of New Zealand. Since their agitation on the Chinese Question has proved to be labour lest — owing, we -think, mainly to the weak resistance offered — we would draw tlieir attentio-n-to tlit \ Export Duty of 2s. 6d. an ounce on gold, which we. think is an unjust tax on their labour. If the Treasury Offices are low, -ami need replenishing, why should oneclass bear the brunt of all ? Why not ' charge so much a bushel on wlv.at, oats, Sc. ? or so much on prevrved meats ? in fact, put an export duty an all provincial produce, so that it will be divided ? It will r be, answered that U is necessary to continue - the Export duty on gold to meet the extracost entailed on Government for the man ; agement of the GoldfieUs. For instance, . the admirable roads we have constructed, io^^ the same; also the enormous expense o/ v paijing one Warden, one Gold Receiver, one Clerk of the Court, .and three policemen to look after four or five districts, with &''■ population of over jour thousand. The.re.-. > venue derived from mineis' .rights at one,. , pound should be reducedjatJleast to one-half. Applications, registrations of claims and water races must be something considerable, not calculating the amount of dutiable goods consumed by miners, which is more- than aiiZL equivalent for all ihey receive: We would suggest that petitions for tlie abolition of the-JExport Duty on gold, also for ther r&~ duction* of miners' right's to -one-half,- 6e' drawn up, and two or* three delegates, ' ac-< ording to population-, be—appointed froiy, c- 1 ch- district, all of .whom to nieet in Du'r£ elm on a day agreed upon, to present the', petitions. Let them- be men ivho are de- - iermined to have justice done to thewclass. TJiegmust not be put off -with. the worth-out ■ sop of "' Qh! we will see into the matter,^, and let you. know in a few weeks what can. be done for you. 1 ' Now is the time far every miner in the Province to rix a*p" -agci'mit this .unjust i nposition. - .Let them* . resolse to agitate until it is removed^. :.Wt they^vfr 1 act' in unison and show a bold froidyi^Govet^ment-dare-noihnegled-iiheir--demandsfor their rights. If. that .course should be of no avail, we would advise them to lay in a stock of gvmpowder tea, warranted to go off. Remember Cox Bros., Storekeepers, Waipori. Hown with Monopoly ! — [At)yt.] Sbrangers paying a visit to Dunedin are often at a losK-to know what is tlie best establishment to visit for the purchase of drapery and clothing.
