Tuesday, 19th Dec. W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., and A. Stewart, Esq., J.P., on the Bench." At the last sitting of the C jurfc William Houston applied for a bottle license for his premises, Manuka Creek. The Bench not being satisfied of the necessity of such a license adjourned for a fortnight to get the report of Police. . The case was again heard this day. Mr. ''ooday appeared for the applicant. The Police sent in a report favorable to the application, and also testified to. his good character. Mr. Gardenor lodged a petition against the license, signed by many of ijie i^eaidents, and a few letters were also lodged against the granting of same. The Bench, after considering the whole circumstances, stated that no doubt Mr. ■ Gardner had a selfish motive in lodging the petition against the license, as he was himself the only publican in the district, and the letters also appeared to have been written by Gardner. On the ooher hand" the report of the Police they considered the most trustworthy and disinterested. They would therefore grant a license to the applicant.
