GENERAL SUMMARY.
London, October Oth. | The health of, the Queen is causing great anxiety. Mr. Gladstone and Prince of Wales have been summoned to Balmoral. Great gales, resulting in many shipwrecks and much loss of life, have taken place on the coast of England. From- Great Grimsby harrowing details have been received A shipwrecks in full sight of the people on shore. The ship James Booth foundered in the Bay of Biscay, and eighteen men were drowned. The ship Hesperus and all hands were lost at Spickerfl'og (?)• The ship Mount Sinai was lost at sea, but no/ -details of her loss are to hand. The stikes in favour of the nine hours movement continue. The masters at Newcastle effected a compromise for 9£ hours till January, and after that nine hours to constitute a day's work. Great distress prevails in cousequence of the demands of the workmen. The London "Telegraph " says there is no doubt that to the misfortune of a deficient Harvest will be added the. disaster of a cattle plague. The foot'and mouth disease is . spreading throughout the kingdom with deplorable rapidity. In tho city of Preston, in ons week, 470 cattle were attacked. It is estimated there aro 25,000 animals suffering in the kingdom. The pest involves sheep and swine. Besides this disease, pleuro-pneumonia is ravaging the herds of England and Scotland. The " Times " says a Bishop and Archbishop have appeared in the pulpit of a; s Scotch kirk and conducted divine The announcement has given a severe shock to the sensitive and ecclesiastically nervous in England. The other classes welcome the event as commencing the system of reciprocity of pulpits. Mr.. Gladstone was presented with the freedom of the city of Aberdeen. He was enthusiastically received there. ' It is reported that Millia, in Moroco, is besieged by 12,000 Kabyles Reinforcements are promised to the garrison. *A letter from Teheran says 80,000 persons perished in Shiraz in July. T.he remaining • 40,000 were captured by the Afghans, • who enslayed many.Tjhe- bakers ' exacted extortionate prices. Four successive tremendous explosion's occurred in the establishment of an oil merchant in Chelsea. 13 . persons were injured.
