' • ••■.--<* Mr. 3f C. Brown moved the insertion of the line from Tpkomairiro to Lawrence in tie first J>che*dule. -j-' Messrs.- 1 Bell, M-iUt-ay, .-Shepherd, anJ others supported the motion. Mr. jQ-isborne stated that, after 'careful Consideration; the Government look- * ittg to the' nature of- the country to be ' traversed/ and the fact of the direction of the line being to, wards the interior, had arrived at the conclusion that it should be treated as a main, and not a ■ 'branch line. The motion was carried" unanimously. The lines from. Wanganui to Wanitara ■ (Taranaki), aikT^shbiirton to Temuka J (Canterbury), were also inserted in the "first Schedule. Mr. Grisborne reserved to the Government the right to decide what .lines of those in the' Schedule should be immediately proceeded with. Mr. Stafford declared that the great .Government scheme had degenerated into a scramble, and rcfuse'd to take any part in the proceedings of tho Co.niniittee.
