WHAT PAYS IN NEW ZEALAND

(To the Editor. )

Sin, — For more than five years back I have been trying to purchase a small holding of my own in -this country. To attain this end I have taken some pains. I had ? been very particular in voting for a member of Parliament who was supposed to hold views of a liberal kind. I had signed upwards of 20 petitions, and moved in every • way short of actual rebellion that is open to an enlightened citizen of this great country. Well, I have been again and again disappointed, and in no way more grievously than by a recent infernal sale. I- have now come to the conclusion that the only thing that is left for me to do is, in the words of the patriotic O'Connell, to "Agitate! agitate! agitate!" and after I have gained notoriety as an agitator of the first water, bothered the powers that be' considerably, and secured the confidence of a lot of men poSSessinpf-As- muoh brains -as the same number of sheep, then quietly transfer my " sweet" persuasive powers " to the other side for a consideration. It may be doubted whether this pays, but in the districts of Tuapeka, Mount Benger, there are quite a remarkable number of instances illustrating and bearing out this theory, Should any of your readers doubt this, you can refer them to yours truly, Every Man "has his Price.
