TUAPEKA. RIFLE CORPS.
The following is : a good illustration of the expedition with which Government business is transacted in the colony of New Zpojand. A petition, signed by somewhere about seventy gentlemen who wished to form a Volunteer Corps in Tuapeka. was forwarded to the authorities for arerptance twelve months ago. Several importunate letters followed the petition, but did not succeed in elicitinir a reply. At last, after passing through all the ramifications of the Circumlocution Offi -c, ami after the gentlemen who volunteered their services had almost fortzot'en the matter, comes the following repl> , whic'i is a plain refusal to aec< p!. the gallant seventy :—: —

Sir, — Adverting to your letters, numbers and dates as >>er margin (and to my t -legram of the 25th instant), respecting the offers of service >>f the undermentioned V- lnsiteer Corps— Tuapeka Uifle Hangers, Wakatip Rifles, Mt. Ida Kifles, Tapinni Rifles, Peninsular Rifles, IJlu^kin Rifl«3, Poitobello Hifles, Otepopo Rifles — T have the honour to refer you to my circular No 72 of the 26th inst., by which you will see that the Government, have decided that for the present they will not recommend Ilia Kxcellence to accept the services of any more standing corps.
