An effort ia being mad© to establish in Edinburgh a hospital for women, where none but women will be admitted, and none but lady " doctors " allowed to practice. Miss Jex Blake is the principle mover in this design. As a good deal of curiosity exists as to the authorship of the " Battle of Dorking," we (" Pall Mall Gazette ") believe we may state with confidence that it was written by Colonel George Chesney, the author of "Indian Polity."

Tbe Emigration Commissioners nave presented their 31st General Report. It states, among other things, that a, large proportion of the emigration from Ireland continues to be defrayed by remittances from friends abroad. In 1870, £727,409 was sent from North America, and £12,804 from Australia and New Zealand.

The New York papers publish intelligence from Jamaica, according to which the Government is advised that the negro squatters intend to attack the judges at Morant Bay if the decision in pending cases is decided aginst them. According to the same papers the Government was making preparations to meet the emergency. The constabulary bad received arms and ammunition, the troops had been ordered to be in readiness, and the Governor was determined- to teach the negroes a terrible lesson if they rose.
