The municipal elections in Paris resulted in twenty-four Conservative Republicans and six Moderates being returned.

In the Natioual Assembly, during the discussion on the petition relative to the temporal power of the Pope, M. Thiers said he intended to avoid compromising the policy of the Government of the country, but would endeavour to cause the independence of the Pope to be respeted. After an excited debate, the petition was referred to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. M. Favre consequeutly tendered his resignation, which M. Tliiers ultimately accepted. At the sitting on the budget Commission, M. Thiers proposed a duty of twenty per cent, on raw materials. The adoption of M. Thiers's proposition by the Assembly is considered improbable. Another proposal to substitute the income tax and duty on salt for the proposed duty on textile fabrics and raw materials was referred to the Budget Commission. 'The Committee of the Army have adopted the military law, rendering service obligatory front the ages of twenty to forty, soldiers in service haveing no right to vote.
