Following are tSe f'es patches reported to have passed between Bismarck and G-r/inville, and about which deplomacy or fight are said to be imminent :
Bismarck to Granville — My compliments. Germany desires to buy the' Island of Heligoland. Ifc lies' close to our coast. Aud we need it. Yours an.! so forth.
. Granville to Bismarck— My warmest regards. Great Britain does nol wish to sell Heligoland. We need it ourselves. It isn't for sale. Tours very truly.
Bismarck to Granville— Compliments of the season. You don't un Icrstand inc. Y\m muvt sell Heligoland. It is a menace to our national safety. We -cannot pernit you to continue to own it. Name your price at-ouee, and no fooliq'ineafi. With expressions of the most distinguished consideration, I am my dear sir, your affectionate and humble servant.
Granville to Bismarck — Honoured Sir. I tell you it isn't for sale. The fact that you covet it is of no importance to us. Hoping, etc., I am, etc.
