WAITAHUNA.
(From our own Correspondent. )
Like other districts throughout the province, we have had our petitions on the education question going their rounds — one being in favour of the present system, and signed only by the parents or guardians of children actually attending school ; the other 1 did not see, but I presume it was a copy of the petition which appeared in your issue of the 17th ult., and ran thus, "That your petitioners labour under disabilities in reference to the education of their children," &c, &c, and yet T know there are some who signed it who have no children. They must have done so on thh strength of "expectations"; but so far as appearances are concerned— well, signing a petition under the circumstances is " looking into the dim vista of tlie future " with a vengeance.
A foot race came off here on Friday, 25th ult.. between two local peds, for £5 a side ; distance, half-a-mile. The rain on the previous night had made the ground in anything but a suitable state for such exercise, and to this is to be attributed, in a great measure, the easy victory obtained b}'- the winner, King, over his opponent, Walker.
The newly formed Waitahuna Dramatic Club gave an entertainment on the 25th ult. , in the Athenseum here. Everything went off well ; the players having taken much pains to make themselves perfect in their various parts. So far as I can learn it was (weather considered) a decided success. I hear the proceeds, which go towards liquidating the heavy expenses incurred by the Club, amounted to about ten pounds. At the conclusion of the pjrformance the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up till morning.
