Earl Granville replied that England would study her own interest, and that the wish of G-ermany to possess the island did not constitute a right. The island had never been under German rule. The Treaty of Washington was ratified after an animated debate. July 10th. The Canadian ports will soon cease to be honoured by the presence of a British flepi, the Commodore's vessel alone remaining.
