CHAMPION ATHLETIC SPORTS.

On Tuesday last Tuapeka was favoured by a visit of the champion runners, who exhibited their just proportions in Mr. M'Cluskey's paddock, Wetherstones. The d^y, although cold, was not very wet. About 200 persons were present in the ring, aud the racing commenced at 2.30. Ist. (Boys) Race— Started and conducted by Messrs. Hewitt and Harris— For boys under twelve years of age. — 11 entries. Ist. Charles Monaghan, 10s. ; 2nd., Frederick Nakes, 7s. 6d. ; 3rd., Herbert Fowler, 2s. 6d. 2nd, (Handicap) Race, 120 yards. Harris (champion) gave the following distances :— Jacob Davidson, 21 yards ; Geo. Maidment, 16 yards ; H. Hudson, 13 yards. The following was the result : - Jacob Davidson, Ist. £3 ; G. Maidment, 2nd. ; Harris, (champion) 3rd. 200 yards (Handicap) Race. — Hewitt (champion) at scratch — for £3. Ist., G. Maidinents £3 ; 2nd., Hewitt; (champion) ; 3rd., Davidson. The distance given to Davidson was 25 yards ; to Maidment. 28 yards. Mr. John Donovan collected a sufficient amount from the number assembled on the ground to have some amateur racing, which created a great deal of amusement. Boys' Race for all ages and sizes. Thirty fine boys quickly took up their places. The result was as follows :—lst.,: — Ist. , Frederick' Nakes, 7s. ; 2nd., Charles Monaghan, 5s ; 3rd., — Downie, 3s. 6d. We may add that great credit is due to Mr. H. Bastings and Mir. Sheath in co nducting the proceedings.
