Some unimportant business having been completed, Mr. B.istings moved — '' That the petitions of certain residents of Mount BcMiger and Tuapeka districts be referred to the Committee upon Goldfields Management to report upon same." — Carried. On Mr. Bradshaw uiuving tuu.t Cuu Coun^ii lx-suive itself into Committee of Supply, a long discussion took place, and Mr. Shand moved — "That this Council is of opinion that the Estimates prepared by the Government in regard to departmental expenses are excessive, and not warranted by the position of the province. It therefore resolves that the Estimates be sent back to the Government for re-consideration, and that Estimates be brought down carrying out retrenchment to the utmost possible limit." The amendment was lost on a division by 26 votes to 17.
