LAWRENCE CHRISTY MINSTRELS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — I notice from your advertisement columns that the Lawrence Christy Minstrels will give one of their entertainments on Thursday first. From the programme, I anticipate a crowded house ; and I believe the entertainment will far exceed any previous one. The benefit, 1 observe, is to be devoted to clearing away some debt incurred by the purchasing of instruments, dresses, &c. When it is remembered that the -gentlemen who form this troupe have given several benefits in behalf of the local institutions of the district, I have no doubt 'the public will turn out well,' 'and give the Lawrence Christy's good encouragement to. continuein their work of well doing. It is to be regretted that all the time and trouble devoted to the preparation of pieces for those entertainments should evaporate in one night. I see no reason why the programme to be carried out on Thursday should not be repeated m say a fortnight or a month hence, for the benefit of some institution, local or otherwise. I feel assured the Chris tys would gladly repeat the programme for such an object. The Benevolent Asylum is a most worthy in-

stitution, and at present as short of funds as any in the province. Then, " there are several in the district- receiving benefit from that institution, and several that art; under the shelter' of its' roof who plight have been living in abject poverty at our very doors. This institution haß many claims upon the Tuapeka district, and although I am aware a subscription list for that institution went the round recently, still I consider the sum collected was not equal to the benefits conferred by the institution in the district.

I would have suggested that a benefit be given for the Tuapeka Hospital, but the' Committee, I have heard, treat the Chnstys in such a niggardly manner that they will not for love or money give a benefit for the local Hospital while it is under its present management.

1 hope, Sir, you will excuse these few incoherent remarks, and I trust the suggestions contained in them will not fall, to the ground. — I am, &c, ■ Admirer. Lawrence, July 5, 1871.
