AN ACROSTIC.
R ave on, poor harmless cur, rave on at leisure, I nvent the lies which give thee sweetest pleasure. G reedy of guilt, make all the meal you can, H alf hound, half tiger, monster, but no man. T urn good to bad, make bitter of the sweet, E ven meek woman trample with your feet. O do your worst, while those you fain would slay, U nheeding walk upon their quiet way, S erenely looking for a reckoning day. N ot on this earth thy punishment be hurled, E xpect it though ; — for in another world S atan himself will find with fiendish glee, S ome fitting recompense for such as thee. Switzers, May 3rd, 1871.
