TRIUMPHANT ENTRY OP THE PHUSSIANS INTO PARIS. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. (From Grevilh's Telegram Company, Renter's Agents.) [The following was published as an Extra on Tuesday last : — ] Nklson, April 17. The City of Melbourne arrived at 3 p.m. to-day. She left Honolulu' on the I 28th ult. Passengers : —For Auckland, 12 ; Sydney 11. Kaye, mail agent, is a passenger. She brings a large cargo for Auckland and Sydney. Latest dates : — London, March 17 ; San Francisco, March 18. The East Lothian sailed from New York for Auckland, with a cargo of kerosene. London, February 24th. Crowded meeting held in London last evening, in favour of the disestablishment of the Church of England. In the House of Commons Disraeli made a powerful speech in relation to the Prussian question. Gladstone replied denouncing his interference, and assuring ihe House that the Conference would hear the Russian case in all fairness. General Duff laid before the House the budget for Tndia, which is a highly favourable statement of the finances of the country. Washington, Feb. 27. Sunday being the anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic in 1848, the "Reds" held noisy demonstrations. A police agent, who attempted to interfere for the preservation of peace, was seized by the crowd, tied to a plank, and thrown into the Seine, where he was drowned. Boedeaux, Feb. 21. The Assembly ratified the conditions of peace, and voted a denunciation of Napoleon and the empire. March Ist. The German troops entered Paris today at 10 a. m. Excited crowds had gathered at Mont Maitre and Belle Ville lastnight, listening to incendiary speeches, and shouting defiance to the enemy, and the authorities had deemed it safer to throw barracades at cross streets, on the line of march. At an early hour next morning preparations were complete. The streets were nearly deserted, being occupied only by strong borders of French troops to keep peace. A.t the appointed hour the first representative of tha victorious army entered within the Enciente, under the eyes of his Imperial Majesty. The French troops vacated the streets as the Germans approached. The 11th Corps advanced in two columns, one by Port de Nuilly, the other by Port de Jour. As the troops proceeded

along the line, artillery took position , from Porte de Nuilly and from Porte de Jour to the Place de la Concord. The German Hussars galloped down every avenue leading to the Champ Elyses to search the streets, and branching then from the staff they rode down the Champs Elyses to the house of Queen Christina, where their head quarters were established. Behind the staff came battalions of the 88th, the Blue Dragoons, detachments of Bavarians, and a corps of artillery. There was no disturbance, and the people behaved admirably. , London, March Ist. There was much agitation in several quarters of Paris last night. The Emperor William refused to enter Paris. March 2nd. The "New York Herald" despatch says that some of the troops entering Paris were mobbed, and that there were cries of " Wait till we enter Berlin ! " March 2nd. The war indemnity is made payable in three instalments — one milliard in 1871 ; double that amount in 1872 ; and the same in 1873. The preliminaries of peace provided that the evacuation should commence on the ratification of the treaty by the Assembly ; that the Germans make no more requisitions ; and that all prisoners be immediately liberated on ratification of treaty. The Germans will hold the departments of Marne, Ardemus, Manse and Belfort, until after payment of two milliards. Beetjn, March 3rd. The Emperor, in a despatch to the Empress, announces that the peace was definitely arranged. Berlin is mad with excitement. London, March 3rd. Paris is completely evacuated to-day. Washington correspondents aver that counter claims by Great Britain for damages to property of English residents in America during the war of rebellion, and to Canada for injuries received by citizens of Dominion during the Fenian raid, will probably be insisted upon, and pressed by British members of the High Commission in the Alabama Bill. Bordeaux, March 3. In the Assembly, Favre proposed abrogation of all laws restricting right of people to hold meetings and form associations. The Assembly has granted Thiers 3,000,000 francs for immediate expenses of the Government. The Czar sent a deputation of distinguished Russian army officers to salute the Emperor of Germany on his way to Berlin. March 4. The German forces have received orders to retire behind the line of the Seine. Paris has resumed its ordinary appearance. The barricades have been removed and the Boulevards are filled with promenaders. A restaurant in the Champ Elysis has been gutted by the people, for receiving and entertaining Prussians. Washington, March 6; All the members of the Joint High Commission dined together at the residence of the British Commissioner, on the evening of the 4th hist. London, March 6th. In the House of Lords this evening the Marquis of Salisbury attacked the foreign policy of the Government, showing that foreign powers were all contemptuous in their manner towards England. Prussia has declined England's aid in reestablishment with France, and Russia has repudiated her obligations solemnly agreed at the end of the Crimean War. He urged the reorganisation of the army early. Granville protested against the attack, and the discussion ended by the adoption of an order for repudiating the text of the guarantee given by England in continental matters. Gladstone communicated to the House the unsettled condition of Westmeath County, Ireland. Bordeaux, March 6. In the Assembly, Louis Blanc, Victor Hugo, and Quinst demanded that the

Provisional Government should return an account of their acts up to the capitulation of Paris. Delescuse demanded their arrest on a charge of high treason. New York, March 7. The mail contract has just been signed by Julius Yogel, W. H. Webb, and Ben. Holliday, New York, for the establishment of a monthly mail line between San Francisco, New Zealand and Australia. The pioneer vessel leaves San Francisco on the 7th April. The speed is to be such that the mails shall be delivered in London from Sydney, and vice versa, in 48 days. London, March 7. The " Times" announces that Goschen succeeds Childers as First Lord of the Admiralty ; Stan field succeeds Goscheu as President of the Poor Law Board ; i Baxter succeeds Stanfield as one of the Secretaries of the Treasury, and Fevre succeeds Baxter as Secretary of the Admiralty. Paris, March 9. Napoleon addressed a communication to the President of the French Assembly protesting against the vote by which that body declared that his dynasty had forfeited the throne. In the House of Lords, Granville announced that the Conference on the Eastern question had closed, and the treaty signed at the Foreign Office abrogating the restriction in admission of foreign men-of-war into the Dardanelles and BosI phorus. In the House of Commons, Disraeli A'iolently opposed, and Gladstone defended the abolition of the purchase system in the army. The Bill was read a second time. In the House of Lords, Earl Carnarvon related that of 300,000 barrels of powder in the Government Arsenal, all but 8,000 had been found worthless. San Francisco, March 18. The s.s. Nevada and Oneida leave this port on the Bth April for Honolulu, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers, connecting with steamers for Sydney and Melbourne. The vessel following the Nebraska (?) will proceed to Sydney direct, via Auckland. SHIPPING. Arrived : — Excelsior, Argyleshire, Mary Sheppard, from Auckland. Sailed : — Roslyn Castle for Otago, Bethsham for Nelson, Norma for Canterbury, Alexandrina for Auckland. The third contract made by Yogel, of Bth March, with Webb, of Washington, is reported different from Stewart's, chiefly for a shorter period, and not to go to Sydney, but down the New Zealand coast. Same subsidy. The Nevada leaves on the Bth April, going down coast to Dunedin ; other vessels going same route if practicable. Congress refused to give subsidy. The Caledonian Co., have lodged for the fortnight 13,665 ozs., independent of specimens now in bank, containing 500 ozs. Dividend, L12 — declared to-day. Messrs. Haincs and Bird, Champion Pedestrians, are passengers per Phcebe, for Canterbury, where they will perform. Hewett will follow by the Taranaki. The trio will perform in Dunedin on the Queen's birthday. They met with general success in Auckland.
