TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening last. Present — the Mayor and all the councillors.

CORRESPONDENCE. The Town Clerk read the following letter : —

Council Chambers, - Lawrence, March 27.

Sir, I am instructed by the Town Council of Lawrence to hiing before your notice the probable had state of Roes Place in this town, unless some prompt steps are taken to prevent the same.

It is ti ue that dining the prolonged summer there has been no c.iuse of complaint, hut there is little doubt that when the winter fairly sets in, the traffic along Ross' Place will have to be suspended unless a good layer of gravel bo placed thereon bcfoie the road 13 broken by the frost. This, I need scaicely inform you, could be done at the piesent time for consideiably les3 money than if'deferred to a later season.

Barnett said it was necessary to place a box culvert near Mr. Armstrong's place, A\ hitehaven-s'reet, to carry off water which accumulated riming heavy rains. There was formerly a drain formed there for thai purpose, but it had been filled up in forming footpath, and to prevent an inevitable nuisance, he would suggest, 'that a culvert be at once tixed. Cr. Coverlid said some time aijo ha had asked that the agreement between ihe Jiioenik Company and the Council mntht be laid on the ta! le ; as it was not yet forthcoming he would move that it be produced on next Council night. Cr. Mears seconded. The Mayor read the following report of the Rate Committee :—: —

The Town Council, Lawrence. In accordance with instructions from the Council, the Town Clerk has submitted to your committee a statement of the uncollectnl Kites for the years ISGB. 1867. IS6S. and 1569, and upon a cursory review of the same at a meeting held on Tuesday, the 2Stli March, we instructed the Town Clerk to ascertain as nearly as possible what amounts would he recoverable of the total r mount which appears as I.eing due to the Cornell by or according to the ledger of tho Corporation. At an adjourned meeting held on Ihe 30th March, the Town Clerk represented that from ihe number of outstanding amounts du 1 , he had been unable to make an approximate estimate, but would prepare a tabulated statement to be presented at your next meeting. wherein v.-ill apjieav recommendations by y>uv Cf)tnmi h tee as to future proC2ilure by the Council with regard ro the seveial amounts. In reply to a question by Or. Mears, The Mayor said the bye-laws were in progress, and would, shortly be in a sufficiently advanced state to be placed before the Superintendent. Tho Council then adjourned until Thursday.
