THE LATE BAZAAR.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — T observe that my letter, written against the Church of Fngland Jjazaar as being an imscriplural means of raising funds fnr the Church, has had the effect ot calling forth three very weak attempts at justification. In the first place "Jusiitia" favours me with a tirade of hazy nonsense, ending with the motto of the Garter, the writer, 1 take it, notbeinu sufficiently conversant with the soiiptnres to quote therefrom. The. only clearly intelligible portion of " Jnstitia's" effusi .-n is wlure he grants yon, Mr. Editor, permission to cue it short, as being of iittle consequence. As such I pa3s it by.
In the next place we have " Churchman " defending what he terms tho " legitimate practices resorted to during the late bazaar." J believe such practices to be sinful to a degree, and your correspondent is wrong in accusing me of " dictating to Churchmen " when I assert that the religion of Jesus is mocked when such measures are adopted to support it. Far be ie from me, h. poor sinner, to dictate in so serious a matter ; but this much I will say, that there are many so-called Churchmen in this little town of ours whose moral characters would not bear the light of day ; T grant it is possible they may be Churchmen, but it is impossible they can be true Christiana. Surely this plain statement is not '■ cant and humbug." With regard to the suppoit of the ' hurch, my own impression is that if there existed a more general love for the woik of ovsr Saviour, there would also be a more general desire to cnnlribule for that purpose, each one according to his means, and there would be no necessity for ez.*or:i'n such as is now the praciice. I pas 3 over " Churchman's " personalities. Lastly, " The Publican " compares me to the self-righteous Pharisee. It is written, "There are none righteous, no not one." Oh " Publican " your conscience tells yon that you are wrong in thus judging me. You feel that my humble desire Itspbeen to strike} a blow
In '.vy !Mnjier'M canst*, and yet yon, with Limonf'aLle weakness, h:wo coiaiuinned me for so eioing. Bi.t I d..,r0 n<>t be ir malice to you or othor , l.ut ■■•use pi\iy, " Kithor, foigr. o them, for t .ey 1 ilav not what they do." I am. &c , f'ITIZEX. Lawrence, March 2') th, 1871.
